Our beloved Carol Jean Dunn Hathaway passed away Friday, May 20. 2022 at the Rosewood Village, Greenbriar at the age of 92. She was born in Danville, VA, on February 17, 1930. Carol grew up in the Belmont area of Charlottesville and remained in the area for the majority of her life. She was a joyful presence with her colorful clothes, bright scarves and beautiful hair styling (having been trained as a hairstylist.) Carol would immediately light up any room she entered. She enjoyed family gatherings, good conversation and singing along to any tune.
Carol was the only daughter to Ira J. and Bertha Dunn who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death are brothers; Ira, Bill, Raymond, Ralph and John Dunn. Remembering with love, surviving sisters-in-law, Sarah Dunn and Lilly Dunn. Also including many nieces, nephews and their families.
Carol was married to Samuel W. Herring, Sr, while raising her family. She married Robert Hathaway, later in her life. Both have preceded her in death. Carol had great sorrow at the sudden loss of her daughter, Patricia Ann Herring, December 8, 2020.
Carol is survived by her sons, Samuel W. Herring, Jr. and wife Connie of Crozet, VA. James “Manny” Herring and wife Jenny of Charlottesville, VA.
Surviving are granddaughters; Dana Hoffman with husband Jeff of Palmyra, VA and Sandra Cronin of Atescadaro, CA. Surviving grandsons; James Herring with wife Kim of Scottsville, VA and John Herring with wife Lisa, Phoenix, AZ.
Carol found great joy in her eight great grandchildren, always remembering something special about each one.
Graveside service will be held at Monticello Memorial Gardens, Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 1:00 pm for immediate family only. A memorial service will be planned later in the year.
