Chauncey Forward Hutter, Sr., went peacefully to heaven surrounded by family on April 25, 2023. He was born August 25, 1934, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to Beverly Scott Hutter, Sr., and Frances Charlotte Forward.
Chauncey is survived by his younger brothers Beverly Scott Hutter, Jr., residing in Denver, Colorado, and Christian Sixtus Hutter, III, of Lynchburg, Virginia.
Preceding Chauncey’s death was his younger sister, Marian Stannard Stevens of Atlanta, Georgia. Chauncey, 88, passed 106 days after his wife Hermione Walker Davis Hutter. Married for 62 years, they stepped over the line just months apart, closing a beautiful era in their family and community.
In 1960, Chauncey, a Wahoo, married Hermione, an Auburn University War Eagle from Atlanta, Georgia. We fondly remember Chauncey and Hermione’s lifelong friends, from their first apartment on Brandon Avenue, to Bennington Court, Broomley Road, and Kellogg Drive. Chauncey fully engaged in his Charlottesville community, enjoying a vast array of interests and activities. He never knew a stranger. Chauncey flourished as a business owner of Pro-Tax.
With a strong personal faith in Jesus Christ, he served as Deacon at Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he was a founding member, and became Deacon Emeritus. His time at the Men’s Faith and Leadership Forum took priority in his weekly schedule. Chauncey lit up the night sky with fireworks—from the explosive grand finale at First Night Virginia to the booming Crackerjack Club to celebrations in his front yard. For many years Chauncey captained a bateau, The Fluvanna, down the James River at the annual Bateau Festival. He looked forward to long scenic drives with Hermione in the TR3 with the Classic Car Club. He drove that car in every local parade for years, his grandchildren tossing handfuls of candy along the way. He loved delivering Meals on Wheels and served in the Rotary Club and with the Charlottesville-Albemarle Jaycees.
An adventurer, Chauncey also enjoyed snow skiing, whitewater rafting, and canoeing. His love of history most likely started as a boy while visiting his grandparents at their home, Poplar Forest. Poplar Forest was purchased from Thomas Jefferson’s estate after his death and remained in the Hutter family for 130 years. Chauncey donated his time and money and participated in The Albemarle Historical Society, Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest, the American Canal Society, and the Lewis and Clark Foundation, traveling on various historical expeditions including a horseback ride on the Oregon Trail.
Chauncey championed University of Virginia football and basketball teams, rarely missing a game since coming to UVA for school in the early 1950’s. He also enjoyed his reunions at Virginia Episcopal School.
Chauncey and Hermione shared three children: Chauncey, Jr., and twins Emily Compton Hutter Going and Temperance Davis Hutter. Chauncey loved the spouses of his children as if his own: John Mark Going, Karen Tweedy Hutter, Joan Elizabeth Clifford Hutter. He adored his eight grandchildren: Chauncey Forward Hutter, III, (married to Madison Lambrich Hutter, with great-granddaughter on the way), Walker Clifford Hutter, Kaley Elizabeth Hutter, Preston John Hutter, Hermione Grace Going, Sarah Catherine Going, Emily Rose Hutter (Emma), and Julia Davis Hutter.
The family warmly thanks Chauncey and Hermione’s friends and extended family, and especially Emily Davis Oliver (Jenny), Hermione’s only sister, who loved and cared for Chauncey always. Many thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont for their kindness and professionalism.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 16, at 4pm at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. All are welcome. May God bless each of you richly!
