August 31, 1954 – November 18, 2025
Cynthia “Cyndi” Sampson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 18th, surrounded by the family who loved her dearly. Born on August 31, 1954, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Cyndi’s life was shaped by the places she loved and the people who loved her back.
Though Florida was where she spent her early years and where she retired, Cyndi spent her teenage years in New Jersey, her career years in Colorado, and countless joyful seasons in Virginia—first visiting her grandparents, later her parents, and eventually her sister and her sister’s family. She loved the mountains, she loved the beach, and she especially loved being anywhere that family gathered. That love drew her again and again to Virginia, where she always felt at home.
Cyndi built a long and dedicated career with Great West Insurance in Denver, Colorado. Beyond her professional life, she was known as the “cool aunt”—full of life, energy, joy, and generosity. Though she never had children of her own, she adored her nephews and nieces and later her great-nephews and great-nieces, spoiling them with affection, surprises, and an endless ability to delight in who they were becoming.
A lover of good food, good wine, and good company, Cyndi had a gift for hospitality. She created unforgettable meals—simple or elaborate, always made with love—that gathered people together and made them feel at home. The conversations, the warmth, and the togetherness around her table are among the memories her family and friends will cherish most.
Cyndi formed deep and lasting friendships wherever she lived. She leaves behind beloved friends in New Jersey, Florida, Colorado, and Virginia—friends who became like family and who now carry her memory with gratitude.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Ruth Felix and her sister-in-law Judy Felix. She is survived by her brothers, Lyle Felix and Kevin (Charity) Felix, both of New Jersey, and by her sister, Jan (Ed) Lovell, her many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. During the last year of her life, Cyndi made her home with Jan and Ed and their family in Afton, Virginia. Though this year brought hardship, it was also profoundly beautiful. Cyndi spent her final season surrounded by three generations of family, especially delighting in her seven great-nieces and great-nephews, who lovingly knew her as “Gee Gee.”
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 27th at 2:00 p.m. at Olivet Presbyterian Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. All are welcome to come, remember, and give thanks for Cyndi’s life. The service will also be live-streamed on Olivet’s YouTube page.
Cyndi will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. To honor her memory, she would want nothing more than for others to spread kindness—give to a charity you love, cook a meal for a neighbor, offer a gentle word or a simple act of care. The world needs more of that.
The Lovell family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and entire care team at the UVA Cancer Center for their compassion, expertise, and dedication throughout Cyndi’s illness. They also offer sincere thanks to the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont, whose tender, attentive care helped ensure Cyndi’s final days were marked by dignity, comfort, and peace.
Cyndi’s life was a gift, and her legacy of love, generosity, and joy will continue to shine in all the lives she touched.
