

After graduating from Claremont McKenna College, he earned his MD and PhD at the University of California San Diego. He completed his residency in Anatomic Pathology at New England Deaconess and fellowship at the Whitehead Institute.
Dennis began his career in research at Case Western Reserve University before moving his lab to the University of Virginia. Among other topics, he made important research contributions to cell signaling, cancer prevention, and tumor immunology. After retiring from UVA, he spent several years working as the Dean of Medicine at UAE University.
Dennis was a man of many hobbies and enjoyed ceramics, woodworking, homebrewing, photography, sailing, and playing jazz on the piano. He was an active member of several hiking groups in Albemarle County. He spent much of his retirement cruising through France on his canal boat.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Louise Templeton, née Farrar. He is survived by his wife Jeanne Bono and children Thaddeus, Talitha, and Martha Templeton.
Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial and celebration of life at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, VA at 1pm on Friday, March 27th, 2026.
