Dewitt Talmadge Hartwell Sr.

Dewitt T. Hartwell, Sr. ‘Dee’ of Fredericksburg, Palmyra, and Fairfax, VA passed from our world into his heavenly home Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014. He was born March 22, 1924 to Elizabeth and George Hartwell in Mounds, IL. Dee was raised by his sister Ruth Irwin in Washington, DC Dee was a WWII veteran. He was decorated seven times while serving as a navigator with the 8th Air Force in the European theatre. He was a successful self-made business man in the Savings and Loan industry. He retired as the President and CEO of Columbia First Savings Bank of Washington DC and Virginia. He was an active member of the United Methodist churches of Fairfax and Palmyra, VA. He served as trustee for the United Methodist Church Conference and a Trustee for Virginia Wesleyan College. Dee was a wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Dee was always ready to help and serve in any capacity that was needed. His love of God and Country was a great example to all that had the good fortune to know him. Dee was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Shirley, his parents and seven of his eight siblings. He is survived by his sister, Sarah Calkins, his son Skip (Phyliss) and his daughter Pam Hudgins (Tom), his grandchildren, Julie (Carl), Jenny (Todd), Emily (JC), Kerry and Jay. His great grandchildren, Taylor, Justin, Halle, Abbey, Luke, Jayce, Jaxson, Isaiah, and Lincoln brought great joy and love to his life. The family would like to give a special thanks to all his care givers, especially Jay, Tom, Gordon, Matt, and Gail. Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA will be handling the arrangements. A memorial service will be Tuesday, December 2, 2014, 1:00 PM at Palmyra United Methodist Church, 258 Palmyra Way, Palmyra, VA 22963. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will be Thursday, December 4, 2014, at National Memorial Park, 7400 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22042, 10:00 AM. Pamela H.
