Donald L Tuttle

Donald Latham Tuttle, 88, died on August 21, 2023, was born in Miami, Florida, on October 6, 1934, the second son of William O. and Agnes Latham Tuttle. He graduated from Miami High School in 1952 where he excelled scholastically and had distinction as a journalist on the MH Times and as a featured reporter for the weekly Miami Daily News Youth Roundup News. At the University of Florida in Gainesville, Don received a BSBA. He became a member of Beta Theta Pi, was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Florida Blue Key, Phi Kappa Phi, and Beta Gamma Sigma. He wrote for the Florida Gator, was president of the Pep Club and member of ROTC. Following graduation, Don was commissioned a lieutenant in USAF. He Margaret Joan Conkling on December 29, 1956 at Coral Gables Congregational Church. She was then a senior at the University of Florida and him a Second Lieutenant in training as USAF navigator so they each had to return to their respective duties until Margaret graduation in June 1957. Due to his excellent scholarship, Don was able to choose the base to be posted and he opted for MacDill AFB, Tampa, Florida where their first daughter, Laura, was born. Don flew with the 306th Air Refueling Squadron, whose mission was refueling American bomber squadron planes flying missions over the Arctic Circle during the Cold War. After serving our country for four years, Don was awarded the rank of Captain. Following military service, he returned to the University of Florida for graduate education, earning an MBA and began his academic teaching career as a Visiting Professor at the University of Florida. He was granted a Julian Price Fellowship to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. Daughter Angelyn was born in 1969. The next year, 1970, Indiana University made him Professor and Chairperson, Department of Finance School of Business. Under his Leadership of 21 years, the Finance Department increased in size and gained international distinction. Donald authored and edited six books and many articles while at UNC, Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, which introduced using decision and probability theory and statistical techniques to different phrases of investing. Don authored the seminal Managing Investment Portfolios, the definitive work in portfolio management practiced by astute practitioners and internationally by the Certified Financial Institute. This volume was translated by the Japanese Society of Financial Analysts. During his tenure, Indiana University granted him sabbatical Leave to accept appointments as Visiting Professor at the European Institute of Business Administration (INSEAD),1977-1978; to the University of Virginia, 1982-1983; and Georgetown University, 1987-1988. Don Also earned a charter from the Institute of the Financial Analysts in 1971, which began a lifetime of service, first as a volunteer and then as his second career in Charlottesville, Virginia, 1992-2007, as a Senior Vice President. He was a major contributor to the chartering process bringing order, rigor, and innovation to the curriculum, examinations, and the grading process. He was responsible for deciding to use a psychometric consultant to verify the validity of the CFA examination which are granted with worldwide distinction in the field of financial careers. A CFA charter requires three years of study with an examination at the end of each year. For the contributions, The Donald L. Tuttle Award for Excellence in CFA Exam Grading was established in 2001 and has since been given annually in Charlottesville. In previous years, Donald, himself, had received the Institute’s C. Stewart Sheppard Award and the Alford C. “Pete” Moreley Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Tuttle is a former President, Vice President, and Executive director of the Financial Management Association and received the FMA Fellow Recognition Award for his service. He was Associate Editor off The Journal of Finance and Financial Management. He was a member of the ICFA’s CFA Digest Editorial Board for 18 years; formal member of the Institute’s Board of Trustees. Don also served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Bank One’s Group mutual funds, member of the American Red Cross Retirement System and the Research Foundation of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analyst; member of the Board of Regents of the College for Financial Planning and Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan of Indianapolis where he chaired the Audit Committee. He was a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts. Don and Margaret, also known as Peg, enjoyed a lifetime of travel which Don carefully planned. Favorite places were the Outer banks, Myrtle Beach, Sanibel, Florida, and Banner Elk, N.C. for many summers. A few winters were spent at their condo for the love of the mountains. Blowing Rock, Abingdon, Virginia, for plays, antiquing and food. They went back to Miami High School Class reunions and visited family when there. More serious travel was Italy, Greece, they cruised the Mediterranean or toured Europe. For their 50th Anniversary, Don booked a sail around Australia, the islands and the Great Barrier Reef. In addition to his wife, Margaret, he is survived by two daughters, Laura Latham, Galveston Texas; Angelyn Alexander, Atlanta, Georgia; grandson, Alexander Pivateau, LaPorte, Texas; granddaughters Kathryn and Lara Alexander, Atlanta, Georgia. His brother, William M. Tuttle of Jupiter, Florida; nephew, William Tuttle, Miami, Florida; and niece, Wendy Camp, Jupiter, Florida. The Tuttle’s resided at “Lane’s End” 2250 Holly Knoll Lane before moving to the Colonnades in 2013. He was a member of Ivy Creek United Methodist Church. A burial service, for family only, at the Ivy Creek Cemetery is planned. Teague Funeral Home is in charge of the Arrangements.
