Elizabeth James Berry, affectionately known as “Betty,” passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, at Our Lady of Peace in Charlottesville, Virginia. Born January 1, 1925, in Waterbury, Connecticut, Betty lived a remarkable 100 years filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to her family.
After meeting and marrying the love of her life, Robert (“Bob”) Berry, Betty relocated to New Jersey, where they raised their family and built a life together. She enjoyed a rewarding career as a bookkeeper for many years, always balancing her professional life with her true passion—supporting and encouraging her family. Betty’s pride in her children and their achievements was boundless, and she took joy in nurturing each new generation.
Upon retirement, Betty and Bob made Lake Monticello, Virginia, their home. There, they flourished—playing cards and golf, traveling the world, and making lifelong friends. After Bob’s passing, Betty continued to embrace all that life had to offer, especially at Our Lady of Peace, where she spent her final nine years. Her family is deeply grateful for the joyful, active years she enjoyed and for the compassionate care she received as her needs increased.
Those who knew Betty remember her independence, sharp wit, and deep pride in her family. She delighted in a good game of Bridge or golf and loved to explore new places, from Europe to the Caribbean. But above all, her greatest joy came from being surrounded by her loved ones.
Betty is survived by her children: Linda Mackey (Bill), Ron Berry (Ann Marie), David Berry (Linda), and Barbara Berry (Craig). She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Berry. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Rd., Charlottesville, Virginia, 22903, at 1:00 p.m. on August 28, 2025, with a repast immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lake Monticello Fire and Rescue, 10 Slice Road, Palmyra, Virginia, 22963.
