Claiborne’s smile radiated an authentic joy for  life including her nursing career. This photo was taken at a NIH holiday party in December 1990. She had a remarkable  career at the NIH and beyond and her legacy will include her passion and compassion that were embedded in all that she touched- patients and projects. Wishing her family and all who loved her peace as you navigate your grief.

My condolences to all as we morn the passing of our beloved friend Clai.  I met her in college at Salem College. Petite and horse, she was a classmate and amazing horseman. Clai made riding look fascinating. She has always shared her love for her family, her horses, and her work. I will miss her kindness dearly.

I worked for several years with Claiborne when she served our Nursing Research Program at the UVA Health System.  I am sorry to learn of her passing, too soon.  I was touched by the story in the paper about her final good bye with her horses.  In the few years I knew her I always found her to be a serious, highly principled professional who contributed significantly to our program.  She spoke often of her family and the many facets of her love of horses.

I was privileged to grow up with my cousin Claiborne during our early youth when we shared family gatherings. Claiborne was smart and keenly observant with a gifted eye for the details. Her professional nursing career was characterized by astute and extraordinarily compassionate healing-care. When one was around Claiborne you were impressed that she was a very special lady who loved all of her family, her peers and friends. She deeply cared for and loved her horses. 
It is said that God has a plan for all of us so it must be that her gifted life is needed urgently in heaven. She is already greatly missed by all who were blessed by her presence.
Claiborne was truly an exemplary gift from her GOD.

So sorry for your loss.  Clai and I were childhood friends. We played together on Somerset and Allendale in Roanoke.  I ate many dinners with your family. Your parents were so kind. I remember how much she loved her horses.  May her memory be eternal.

I am very saddened to hear of Claiborne’s passing.  Claiborne and I worked together at NIH.  We discussed nursing, men, children and life in general.  I loved talking with Claiborne her view of the world was much more ordered than mine.  We came from different backgrounds- I grew up in Massachusetts and Claiborne farther south.  She had a great love for her husband, her daughter and of course horses.  I am very glad she enjoyed seeing her horses before she passed. Rest in peace Claiborne.

I was so stunned and sad to learn of Claiborne's illness and passing. After my family moved out of our Crozet neighborhood several years ago, Claiborne and I mostly kept in touch on FB. She, Mike and Eliz were wonderful neighbors (and Eliz was a great pet sitter!). I always thoroughly enjoyed chatting with Claiborne; she was easily the best conversationalist I have ever known. Passionate about horses, her family, her sister's beautiful art, and her career, she was one of those people you were just happy to know. I'm so lucky she lived right across the street! It is spectacularly unfair that she is gone too soon. Eric, the boys and I send our deepest condolences to Mike, Eliz and all who loved her. She truly will be missed.

I am so very sorry to read about Claiborne’s passing. I taught first grade to Elizabeth and knew what a special mother and daughter relationship they had already developed. My thoughts and prayers are with Elizabeth and Mike.

I had the pleasure of working with Claiborne at UVA Health.  She was sweet, kind and oh so smart! She was an asset to the nursing research program and I learned a lot from her. When we weren’t talking about work, she would share stories about her daughter, many of which included the horses!   I was saddened to hear about her illness, and find some comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering. My deepest condolences to her family.

To Claiborne's family - the news of her battle and passing truly knocked me sideways. I am saddened to hear of Claiborne's suffering . We had just corresponded not long prior of she and Eliz possibly making a trip to Colorado for a visit after college and was just thinking of following up on that when I saw that Eliz had gotten married. Claiborne was a dear friend whom I met in my mid 20's and we had such nice days spent together in Maryland and kept it up after she moved to Charlottesville. Most of our time together naturally revolved around horses and Eliz so it does not surprise me at all that her final wish was to see her horses again! I will remember her for her impeccable horsemanship skills. She always did everything correct, by the book, and it showed in her riding, her horses' health, and her daughter's subsequent success as a horse woman! A fun fact which I will always remember is that she would chop up zucchini very tiny and 'hide' it in whatever dinner she was preparing for Elizabeth to ensure she was getting enough vegetables. I had such pleasant visits and outings with them both and this is how I will remember Claiborne. My sympathies again.

I worked with Claiborne at NIH for many years. She was always so kind and helpful in the research office, taking time to explain the statistics end of research. She and I and another colleague Barb would always be the first in the office and would discuss many things. She definitely loved her horses and her family and was so proud of you Elizabeth. Claiborne and I worked many years at NIH and loved talking about our horses and our children. She was the sweetest dearest friend and loved her daughter with her entire heart. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and horses.

I took this picture of Claiborne at the wedding when Elizabeth & Will were dancing. It shows what a beautiful person she was inside & out. This captures her so happy! I also have memories of happy times on trail rides, at the Horse Center for Pony Club rallies, celebrating E’s birthday during Show Jumping rally, & the amazing week in KY for Nationals. I will cherish our visits every few weeks during her courageous year & a half fight. I am blessed to have been her friend. She can forever ride Roadie in the big field in the sky! Love, Kristie
