Elizabeth “Claiborne” Miller- Davis was born in Norfolk, VA, on Nov. 27th, 1960, as the eldest of four sisters to Elizabeth and John “Milton” Miller. There was little on this earth that she could not overcome. Claiborne attended North Cross School while working for her father as a nurse assistant. She attended Salem College where she founded the horse-riding team and pursued a degree in biology with a passion for learning, teaching, and helping people. This was carried forward into a Nursing degree from Medical College of Virginia and a master’s degree in nursing informatics from University of Maryland. After being a travel nurse for 5 years, Claiborne worked for the National Institutes of Health for 28 years, accruing many important publications and awards for excellence in nursing, leadership, and nursing research.
In the midst of her illustrious career, she married Michael Davis and together they had one daughter, Elizabeth, to whom she passed on her love of horses and insatiable curiosity. As Elizabeth grew up, Claiborne selflessly pivoted her career to work closer to home at UVA Health Center as a Nurse Research Coordinator. Despite her cancer diagnosis in August of 2023, Claiborne achieved Nurse Researcher Leadership Excellence Award Winner of the Year for 2024 in Virginia. A lifelong, passionate horsewoman, Claiborne spent her free time riding horses in the company of her friends and daughter, as well as running the Mountain Skyline Pony Club.
After a year and a half battle with cancer, Claiborne peacefully passed away early in the morning of April 11th, 2025, at Sentara Martha Jefferson hospital. She is survived by her husband, Michael, her daughter, Elizabeth, and her three sisters, Susan Bradbury, Mary Motsinger, and Anne Miller. We all love her so much and hope she now gallops free with her beloved horses that passed on before her.
A celebration of life will be held on April 26th, 11:00 am, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood, VA. with a reception to follow in the church parish hall. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hopes Legacy Equine Rescue.
