Genevieve Dickinson “Jenny” Jennings, age 78, of Palmyra, died peacefully at her home at Lake Monticello on Sunday, January 17, 2016, with her daughters by her side. Genevieve was born November 27, 1937 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Granville Cordon and Edna Wingfield Dickinson. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Vernell D. Gibson, and Earline D. Shifflett; her step-father, Robert “Daddy Rob” L. Miller; her niece and namesake, Genevieve Gail Weakley; and her beloved husband of 48 years, Douglas “Wayne” Jennings.
Genevieve is survived by the joys of her life, her two daughters, Donna M. Jennings of Palmyra, and Susan R. Jennings of Reston Virginia; a loving sister, Alease D. Powley and her husband, William “Bill” Powley; two sisters-in-law, Jacqueline Jennings, and Thelma Jennings Gianniny; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved little dog, Bella.
Genevieve grew up in Charlottesville and graduated from Lane High School in 1956. She married Wayne, her high school sweetheart, in 1958 and, after a brief time away from Charlottesville during Wayne’s military service, she resided in the Charlottesville area her entire life. She treasured the years she and Wayne spent raising their daughters, and considered motherhood to be her life’s purpose. She was proud to be a devoted wife, homemaker and stay-at home mom to her daughters. After her girls were older she worked at Cavalier Beverage as an office/payroll administrator for over twenty years.
Genevieve loved flowers, container gardening, and the promise of a new spring season. She enjoyed spending time outside, and her fondest memories included camping trips with her family and surf fishing at her sister’s home in Rodanthe, NC. During boating season she enjoyed going out on her pontoon boat with her daughter at Lake Monticello, especially when friends and family came along to take in the fun. She enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, painting artwork, and challenging herself with crossword or sudoku puzzles.
Genevieve had a compassionate heart and touched the lives of her friends and family members in countless ways. She had a kind word for all and enjoyed spending time with her friends, sharing stories and laughs.
Genevieve felt blessed to have so many good friends and neighbors, and she brought much joy and laughter to their lives. She leaves behind special friends whom she considered part of the family, including Dale and Deb Carr of Palmyra, Betty Jean Lawson of Alexandria, Virginia, Kaye Campbell of Troy, Virginia, and Joan and Jerry Moore of Charlottesville, Virginia. She also loved her family at the salon and appreciated the pampering, friendship and love she received over many years from her friends, Lara Upton, Rebecca Johnson, and Helena Johnson of Palmyra. Over the last year Genevieve was also touched by the kindness and friendship of Cheryl Falkenburry of Palmyra, Virginia, who took care of Bella for several months throughout Genevieve’s illness.
Genevieve’s life was also blessed by many healthcare professionals and caretakers who provided comfort and assistance. The family would like to thank Dr. Karl Clebak and the nurses and staff at Lake Monticello Primary Care for their kindness and all that they did to attend to Genevieve’s health over the years. The family also appreciates the care she received from the UVA Health System, UVA Health South, The Colonnades, T&L Companions, and Hospice of the Piedmont.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at 2 p.m. at the Teague Chapel. Immediately following the service the family will receive friends and family until 5 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home.
