George F. Hammel, 93 of Charlottesville, VA passed away peacefully on June 9, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Patricia M. Hammel (2/21/1932 – 10/7/2020). He was born on April 6, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Marjorie V. (Prenderville) and George F. Hammel. George has six siblings including four sisters (Valerie, Virginia, Kathleen and Margot) as well as two brothers (Brian and John). He is survived by five children; George V and wife Rose of Temecula, CA, James of Black Mountain, NC, Kevin and wife Karen, Maureen Chandler and Husband Peter II of Earlysville, VA, John and wife Susan Tuccio Hammel of Hingham, MA. Additional survivors include: eleven grandchildren; George Hammel VI, Sarah Hammel, Jarryd Hammel, Erik Hammel, Christy Harty and husband Rob, Peter Chandler III and wife Katie, Ben Chandler and wife Sandi, Michael Chandler and wife Erin, John Chandler and wife Charlotte, and Steven Chandler and partner Hana Lagana; three step-grandchildren; Andrew Tuccio and wife Shelby, Alex Tuccio and fiancé Shannon McGregor, and Hunter Tuccio and fiancé Emily Reed; ten great-grandchildren; Grace, Abby and Collin Harty; Claire, Olivia, Henley , Julia, Henry, and Jack Chandler and Mia Tuccio as well as numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family members.. George is also survived by six siblings including four sisters (Valerie, Virginia, Kathleen and Margot) as well as two brothers (Brian and John). George served as a sergeant in the US Army at Fort Dix, in New Jersey from 1951 to 1957 and received an Honorable Discharge. George was an active investor and enjoyed following the stock market. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed travel. He was active in the Elks Club of Charlottesville. He was a supporter and held positions within the Republican Party. He loved enjoying time with his wife and children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A memorial mass will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at St Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow separately at St Vincent Ferrer Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St Jude Children's Hospital.
