Jane Crawford Franklin, 81, of Charlottesville Virginia passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Friday, October 27, 2023. Despite her many health challenges, Jane was her kind, patient, loving, understanding self until the end. To say she will be missed is an understatement.
The only child of the late Carl J and Hildred Johnson Crawford, Jane was born on July 14, 1942, in Montgomery WV. In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her childhood best friend and sister of the heart, Beth Nutter McGill, in June of 1977. This was devastating for Jane. Beth graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing and was the reason Jane moved to Charlottesville. Additionally, she was preceded by her first husband and father of her children, Nelson Larry Moore, second husband Ronald Wayne Franklin, and mother-in-law Frances Franklin Eudailey. Family was everything to Jane and her first cousins were like siblings. She felt very deeply the loss of cousins William “Corky” Ghee and his wife Connie, Earl Curry, and Kay Curry Chico.
Jane is survived by her children, Lesley Moore Forloines (Glenn) and Nelson Larry Moore II. Jane was an exceptional mother but the absolute joys of her life were her grandchildren. She would say being a mother was wonderful but nothing compared to being a grandmother. Gee’s grandchildren Tyler, Megan, Wilson and Emmy Forloines feel this loss deeply and loved having her live with them the last 4.5 years. She is also survived by her precious first cousins Mary Olive Elder(Jerry) and Ginny Curry, dear friend and “sister wife” Kirbie Dempsey Moore, sister-in-laws Delores Franklin McClean (Don), and Judy Moore brother-in-law Doyle Berkley Franklin (Linda), step-children Ashley Poindexter-Tarmy (Adam) and Arron Poindexter (Tina), numerous cousins and many wonderful friends.
A graduate of Gauley Bridge High School, Jane attended Stephens College Finishing School, Morris Harvey College now University of Charleston, and received dual master’s degrees from the University of Virginia (1972) in counseling and speech and language pathology. Jane and Nelson moved to Charlottesville in 1968. Jane worked at Albemarle High School then was a stay-at-home mom until Dallas Crowe offered her a position in the Charlottesville City Schools. During her 25+ years with the city schools, she served as a speech pathologist at Burnley Moran Elementary, Jackson Via Elementary, Buford Middle, and Charlottesville High Schools.
In addition to her career in education, Jane was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and served as a Chapter Advisor at UVA. She was also active in the Junior League of Charlottesville for many years. A member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years she served as Deacon, Elder, and youth group leader. “Miss Jane” accompanied the youth group to the Montreat Youth Conference several summers. She was an enthusiastic traveler with a special love for England. After retirement, she took her children and grandchildren on an eleven-day adventure through Europe and it was AMAZING!!
On December 12 Jane would have celebrated 35 years clean and sober. She truly carried the message and practiced the principles of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous in all her affairs and every aspect of her life. The impact she had on the recovery community locally is immeasurable. She was also instrumental in establishing AA/NA meetings for Montreat Youth Conference attendees to have access to during their camp week.
Our family would like to say a special thank you to our caregiver, Charmaine Stinnie. Her loving care of Jane was exceptional. She provided comfort and support during a difficult time and Jane positively adored her. A celebration of life is planned for Saturday November 25, 2023 at 10am at First Presbyterian Church 500 Park Street, Charlottesville VA. There will be a brief reception at the church following the service as we fully respect it’s the day of the UVA/VT game!!! Jane wouldn’t want you to miss the game.
Memorial donations can be made to First Presbyterian Church or The Michael J Fox Foundation to support Parkinson’s research.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.teaguefuneralhome.com for the Franklin family.
