May 25, 1946 - May 15, 2021
Marian Chapman Moore, Professor Emerita at both the University of Virginia and Duke University, died Saturday May 15 in the UVA Hospital. Prof. Moore is survived by her husband of 32 years, Prof. Michael J. Moore. They met at Duke as junior faculty and came to UVA together. She is also survived by her sister Brooke Chapman Correll of Ivy, VA and her brother J. Bruce Chapman of
Honolulu, HI.
Prof. Moore was raised in a military family, the daughter of the late Col. James R. Chapman (USA, Ret.) and his late wife, Laura Stevenson Chapman. Prof. Moore attended numerous schools across the U.S. and in France. She graduated from Heidelberg High School in Germany.
Prof. Moore graduated from the College of William and Mary (W&M) in 1968. She earned an MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1981, she was awarded a PhD from the Anderson School of Management at UCLA. Her initial faculty appointment was at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. She moved to the Darden Graduate School of Business at UVA in 2001, where she remained active until her retirement in 2015.
Prof. Moore was a gifted researcher, teacher, mentor and administrator. Her pathbreaking research, most of it joint with her colleague Julie Edell and some with her doctoral students, inspired generations of scholars to examine the role that emotions play in processing information. She won numerous Teacher of the Year awards and the NationsBank Best Faculty Award at Duke. She was the founding dean of the Global MBA Program at Duke. At UVA, she continued her research, including publishing several award-winning business school cases. She worked tirelessly to help start Darden’s Executive MBA Program, of which she was again the founding dean.
Most recently, Prof. Moore served on the boards of the First Tee of Charlottesville and of the 1693 Scholars Program at W&M.
Beyond her passions for all things academic, Prof. Moore loved travelling to faraway places and playing golf with her husband, Mike. She was a charter member of the “Tuesdays at Two” golfing society in Lake Placid, NY, where she & Mike spent the summers. She played her beloved East Course at Farmington too many times to count, often with her friends from the “Babes in Books” book club, with her sister Brooke, and with Mike. Another book club, “The Page Turners,” was a recent addition to her crowded schedule. She loved to cook and socialize with her friends and family, notably her UVA/Darden colleagues in the LOCAs (Ladies of a Certain Age). She was an enthusiastic and talented watercolor artist. She was a huge fan and supporter of the UVA sports programs, especially basketball and baseball
.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Remembrances and related information are being handled by the Teague Funeral Service of
Charlottesville. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the 1693 Scholars Program or the First Tee of Charlottesville are greatly appreciated.
