Marjorie (Margie) “Sunflower” Elinor Frame Sargent, 82, a resident of Charlottesville, VA, died Wednesday, March 14, 2018, in the care of Hospice of the Piedmont. Marjorie was born in Pittsburgh, PA, five minutes prior to her twin sister, Ruth, on May 10, 1936. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Double Major in Fine Art and English. Marjorie continued her education at the University of Virginia, earning two Masters degrees, one in English and the other in Special Education.
Marjorie became a defender of Native rights early in her life. At the age of 16, she sued the Canadian government for the Baker Lake Indians to have complete rights to their artwork. She won. Later in life, she was adopted by the late Mattaponi Chief Webster “Little Eagle” Custalow. He gave her the name of “Sunflower.” Throughout her life, Marjorie did countless things to assist the Mattaponi, as a tribe and individually. One major achievement was Marjorie co-founded, along with Chief Emeritus Carl “Lone Eagle” Custalow and Dr. Narinder Arora, the Mattaponi Healing Eagle Clinic. It is a health clinic serving Native Americans and their families living in Virginia, located on the Mattaponi Reservation. She served as the volunteer Administrative Director of the clinic for nearly 15 years.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents, William (Bill) Melvin Frame and Ruth Amy Davies Frame; her twin sister, Ruth Frame Salzberg; and late husband Frederick (Fred) Charles Sargent. She is survived by her partner of 20 years, Angela “Silverstar” L. Daniel; her late husband’s brother, Robert Sargent, and wife, Marion; her nephew, Tom Salzberg and wife, Moira, of San Francisco, CA; her niece, Anne Olshan and husband, John, of Stamford, CT; and their respective children, Robby and Carly Salzberg; and Sydney and Natalie Olshan.
