

Mona was born in Pennsylvania on November 23, 1935.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents Harold Elsworth Helsel and Hannah Louise Helsel; sister, Kay Helsel; husband, Wilbert D. Shifflett, and Betty M. Smith.
Mona was a member of Shady Grove Southern Baptist Church. She loved making baby blankets, cooking and canning vegetables from the garden. She loved taking care of children, teaching the Bible, and taking them to church with her.
Mona is survived by her sister, Eleanor (Frank) Douglas; brother, Larry Helsel and wife; son, Claude E. Shifflett (Faye Sprouse) of Earlysville; daughter Janice K. Steppe (Walter Jr.)of Crozet; three grandchildren Patricia A. Steppe (Trish), Stephanie M. Stewart (Jermaine), and Anthony J. Steppe (Emily); six great grandchildren, Kendra Steppe, Jaden Steppe, Samara Frye, Mason Steppe, Tramel Stewart, and Jerome Rose (Jun-Jun). In addition she is survived by Burnie Sprouse (Karen), and Casey Jones.
Mona helped take care of Sharon McCauley, Melisa McCauley, Josh Smith, Victoria Shifflett, and Richie L Lobey II, along with many others, also a host of nieces and nephews and a very special friend Pat Knight.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday September 14, 2022, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Teague Funeral Service 2260 Ivy Road Charlottesville, VA 22903. A funeral service will be Thursday September 15, 2022 at 12 p.m. at Evergreen Church of the Brethren, 614 Evergreen Church Road Dyke, VA 22936 followed by and interment at Evergreen Cemetery. The family would like to invite you back after services to White Hall Community Building 2904 Brown’s Gap Turnpike, Crozet, VA 22932 for a time of fellowship.
