

Nelson was born on October 15, 1940, in Charleston, West Virginia, to the late Irvin Lenna and Clara May Moore. In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by many older siblings from his parent’s previous marriages. His brother, Gordon Wayne “Butch” Moore passed away in 2017 and was a loss he felt deeply.
Nelson is survived by his wife, Kirbie Dempsey Moore; former wife and mother of his children, Jane C Franklin; daughter Lesley Moore Forloines (Glenn) and son Nelson Larry Moore II; step-daughters Jenn Dempsey Kozak (Jason) and Erica Dempsey; step-sons Jeff Dempsey and Jay Dempsey; grandchildren Tyler, Megan, Wilson and Emmy Forloines, Cora Dempsey, Colleen and Jordan Crawford, Jacklin and Jake Kozak; sisters-in-law Avis Moore (Don) and Judy Moore (Butch); and many loved nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Nicholas County High School, Summersville WV (1960), Morris Harvey College now University of Charleston (BA 1965), and University of Virginia (MEd 1981), Nelson was a gifted educator, coach and administrator. He taught/coached at Gauley Bridge High School from 1966-68. Nelson and Jane moved to Charlottesville in 1968 where he spent many years at Henley Middle School as a teacher/coach/assistant principal and principal from 1968-79, Jack Jouett Middle School Assistant Principal 1979-80, Meriwether Lewis Elementary PE Teacher 1981-82, Northumberland Middle School Principal 1982-85, Louisa County Public Schools Director of Personnel 1985-89 and Powhatan County Schools Director of Curriculum & Instruction 1989-91. He had a passion for officiating high school football and cherished the friendships made during that time.
After retiring from education Nelson enjoyed working at Kroger, Boars Head Sports Club and Farmington Country Club. He was a member of Theta Xi fraternity and First Presbyterian Church where he served as an usher and Deacon. He was an avid reader and Civil War enthusiast, enjoyed building and flying model airplanes, woodworking, gardening, boating, traveling with Kirbie and spending time with family especially his grandchildren.
A celebration of Nelson’s life is planned for Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 10:00 am at Forest Lakes North Clubhouse, 1824 Pavilion Cir, Charlottesville, VA 22911. His ashes will be scattered at a later date honoring his wishes.
