

Reginald Allen Hubley 1928-2014 Reginald A. Hubley died on Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at University of Virginia Medical Center. The cause of death was complications of heart failure. He was born on August 21 , 1928, the first son of Reginald M. Hubley and Eleanor F. Hubley of New Rochelle, New York. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 35 years, Karleen Johnson Hubley of Free Union, Virginia; his son, Brandon of Taos, New Mexico, and his wife, Deidre, and their daughter, Jolie; his devoted daughter, Caroline and her husband, Jean Bucquet, Rockaway, New Jersey; as well as his son, Matthew of Free Union, Virginia, who brought him much joy and love as a late-in-life father; a brother, Robert W. Hubley and his wife, June, of Stow, Maryland; special cousins, Barbara Robbins of Misssoula, Montana, and Christine Hardman of Cape Cod, Massachusetts; and Joe Denigan, a " nephew" whose humor and affection brightened many years, and his wife, Shu-Hsin; and a sister, Jeanne Bodroghy, predeceased. He felt his greatest legacy was helping to raise three children who enriched his life immeasurable. Through both happy and difficult times they stood by him with love and devotion, the proudest achievement any father can wish of his children. Mr. Hubley was a World War II veteran, having served in the United States Navy as a radioman. He was based at Haiku Radio Station near Kanoehe, Hawaii, which had been built in secrecy in the middle of an extinct volcano, and transmitted to the pacific submarine fleet. After an honorable discharge in 1948, he attended Bucknell University on the GI Bill, graduating in 1952. He then joined McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. In the next 36 years he rose to a number of executive positions, including publisher of Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine and seven other publication and newsletters. He retired in 1988 as Vice President, International, based in London, England. He then became a consultant for the Economist of London, British Aerospace, PLC, and Nikkei Business Publications of Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Hubley had a lifelong passion for aviation which began when his father paid five dollars in 1939 for a ride in a Stinson Reliant in Armonk, New York. In 1944, he became a member of the Civil Air Patrol and soon earned a student pilot's license. He held an active license and commercial rating into his 80th year. He also owned several aircrafts over the years, and enjoyed introducing young people to flying, taking them on flights and offering basic instruction. It was an inspiration for his older son, Brandon, to follow in aviation and now is a Captain with American Airlines. Mr. Hubley enjoyed many hours of flying with his good friend and fellow aviator, Dr. Charles Thornsvard. Mr. Hubley was on the Board of Nominations of the Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio. He was listed in Who's Who in America for many years, and was a Fellow of the Institute of Directors in London, England where he and his wife resided for 10 years. In Charlottesville, Virginia, he did volunteer work at Recording for the Blind, the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and served on several committees at the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs. The memorial service will be held at Olivet Church on Garth Road at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014. The family wishes that contributions be made to Service Dogs of Virginia or Wounded Warriors in lieu of flowers.
