
Robert Bruce Baumgartner of Nellysford, Virginia, died Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at The University of Virginia hospital. He was born on November 4, 1939 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Dale L. and Leona McKay Baumgartner.Bruce's family moved to Belvidere, New Jersey when he was in high school, and after graduation he attended Rutgers University. He worked in sales most of his career and moved to the Charlottesville, Virginia area in 1974 where he continued his employment with HILTI Fastening Systems. He retired in 2002 after working for HILTI for 30 years. After retirement he and his wife moved from Free Union to Stoney Creek at Wintergreen.Bruce was very athletic and enjoyed most sports as a player and spectator. He was a pitcher in the minor leagues for the Phillies and enjoyed bowling before taking up tennis 1973. He was a member of the Virginia Athletic Foundation for 37 years and was a loyal supporter of University of Virginia with season tickets to three sports. He worked hard at anything he attempted and became a very accomplished in tennis and was ranked regionally and nationally in his age groups. He was also an avid golfer who played and practiced at least five days a week for the past 12 years.Bruce was accepted in the Charles Franklin Shuler Masonic Lodge AF&AM74 in Elkton, Virginia in 1995. He played a tuba in the Second Wind Band in Charlottesville and also played tuba several years with the Stonewall Brigade Band in Staunton.He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Peggy Baumgartner; a son, David Hicks of Bangor, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law, and their children and grandchildren.The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please contribute to a favorite charity.Plans for a memorial service will be published at a later date.
