

Robert Edward Bayer died on July 10, 2015, at Hospice House in Charlottesville, Va. Bob was born on October 26, 1941, in Cleveland, OH, to Charles and Pauline Kamuf Bayer, both deceased. He grew up in Cleveland and was educated at St. Ignatius Preparatory School and John Caroll University, with a BA in history. Bob spent his life in public service, spending twenty years in the US Air Force, as a pilot and a policy and congressional relations officer at the Pentagon. He served for ten years as a staffer for former Sen. Sam Nunn and on the Senate Armed Services Committee, as an expert in base closings and realignments. Subsequently, he was a presidential appointee to the Office of the Secretary of Defense as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Installations with responsibility for base closings. Following retirement, Bob worked as a consultant and as a full-time parent. After a long residence in Arlington, Virginia, Bob and wife Rozanne moved to Charlottesville in 2009. There Bob volunteered with income tax preparation, the Clergy and Laity United for Justice and Peace in Central Virginia, and the Interfaith Movement Promoting Action by Congregations Together (IMPACT) as co-president. He enjoyed biking, swimming, reading history and theology, and travel, including overseas mission trips. A spiritual seeker and a dedicated Christian, he devoted time to his church community, most recently as an elder and active member at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Bob is survived by his wife of 32 years, Rozanne Oliver of Charlottesville, son John Carlos Bayer of Burkeville, VA, sister Nancy Yates and husband Tom of Cleveland, and two grandchildren, Victoria and Isaac, as well as other extended family members. Visitation will be at the Teague Funeral Home at 2260 Ivy Rd, Charlottesville, Friday, July 17, 4 -6 pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 18 at 2 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 400 Rugby Rd., Charlottesville, with a reception immediately following.
