It is with great sorrow that we share that William Dudley Reaves Jr. passed away on January 26, 2022 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Dudley was born on September 26, 1946 in Opelika, AL to Jennie (Stokes) and William “Bill” Reaves. He grew up in Lynchburg, VA along with his sisters Anne Berger (Richard Berger) and Claudia Jones (Stephen Jones). Dudley was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Joan Woodall Reaves to whom he was tirelessly devoted. He is survived by his twins, Wesley Reaves and Jennie Reaves. He loved his extended family including his two sisters-in-law (Jay Woodall and Shirley Roark), his father-in-law (William “Bill” Woodall), his 8 nieces and nephews, and 15 great nieces and nephews.
Dudley cherished time with his family and was always ready for a lunch date, large family gathering, and Christmas with the Woodalls. He was constantly on the lookout for hawks when he should have been driving and was perpetually in motion. He was a fan of anything related to UVA (Go Hoos, Beat Tech!), an eager road trip adventurer, a decoy collector, an ice-cream connoisseur, and gave to a wide variety of charitable organizations which resulted in copious amounts of mail requiring a larger mailbox.
Dudley was a life-long learner and educator. His career in education included teaching 7th grade (Gladys Elementary), serving as an assistant principal (Walton Middle School), education coordinator (Albemarle County), and elementary school principal (Scottsville Elementary, Woodbrook Elementary,William Perry Elementary). In retirement, Dudley enjoyed substitute teaching (Stone Robinson Elementary), mentoring student teachers through Christopher Newport University, instructing student drivers (Albemarle High School), working at the UVA bookstore, teaching ASAP classes (James River Alcohol Substance Abuse Program), and becoming a Master Gardener. He is remembered for his booming laugh, generous spirit, dedication to his profession, and some really funny stories.
There will be a visitation Saturday afternoon, February 5, 2022 from 2-4 at Teague Funeral Service located at 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Please observe the pandemic requirements of mask wearing and social distancing during this event.
