September 26, 1927 – March 24, 2026
With heavy hearts, the family of Lorenzo Otis Davis announces his passing on March 24, 2026, at the age of 98. Lorenzo passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy of faith, strength, and quiet, unwavering love.
Lorenzo was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, and raised in Alton, Illinois. He was the youngest of four children born to Tony Otis Davis and Una Lee Wooldridge, and was preceded in death by his siblings Carl, James, and Margrett. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Esther Berniece Davis (Gibson), the love of his life, with whom he built a strong and faithful family.
He raised his children in St. Petersburg, Florida, before moving to Springfield, Illinois in 1979, where he remained for the rest of his life. A lifelong man of faith, Lorenzo was a devoted member of Calvary Church for over 40 years and a committed member of the Assemblies of God throughout his life. His relationship with God guided him in all things and was evident in the way he lived, loved, and served others.
Lorenzo proudly served his country as a United States Air Force veteran during World War II. Following his service, he built a life defined by hard work and skill as a plumber with Local 137. He was a builder in every sense of the word—not only of homes and projects, but of a strong and lasting family foundation.
He found joy in life’s simple and meaningful moments—gardening, fishing, hunting, and working with his hands. He was known for his quiet nature, his patience, his stubborn determination, and his deep love for his family. He didn’t always say much, but he showed everything through his actions. Whether it was teaching his children how to build, helping a grandchild bait a fishing hook, or simply being present, Lorenzo’s love was steady and sure. His favorite saying, “A dollar is an acceptable tip,” reflected his frugal, practical nature and brought a smile to those who knew him.
Lorenzo is survived by his children: Mark Davis, Karen Doerfler, Karla Davis, and Darlene Davis.
He also leaves behind a loving legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren:
• Through Mark Davis (spouse Teresa):
Scott Davis; and Brian Davis (spouse Sheryl), children Bryce and Cameron
• Through Karen Doerfler (spouse David):
Jeremy Doerfler, child Abel;
Nathaniel Doerfler (deceased), children Christian, Evan, Elliette, and Nora;
and Brianna Doerfler
• Through Karla Davis:
Michael Davis; and Amanda Elshoff (spouse Thomas), children Ezekiel and Levi.
Lorenzo’s children each carry memories that reflect the kind of father he was. Mark remembers countless fishing and hunting trips, as well as long days of hard work side by side—like the Father’s Day weekend they spent installing a French drain, filled with mud, determination, and laughter. Karla recalls being her father’s shadow, sitting by him at the dinner table, learning to build and fix things right alongside him, a bond that remained strong throughout his life, especially when she later cared for him as he had always cared for her. Darlene treasures a special Christmas Eve spent with her father at a football game—time together that became one of her most cherished memories.
To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was a steady presence—a teacher, a provider, and a quiet example of what it means to live with integrity and faith. Whether in the garden, on a fishing trip, or during everyday moments at home, he showed them how to work hard, care deeply, and stand strong.
Lorenzo lived a life of purpose. He loved deeply, worked tirelessly, and remained faithful through every season. As it is written in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Lorenzo did just that.
A visitation will be held at Calvary Church, 501 Hazel Dell Rd., Springfield, IL 62712, at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, with funeral services immediately following at 11:30 AM. A graveside service will take place at Camp Butler National Cemetery, 5063 Camp Butler Rd., Springfield, IL 62707 at 1:00 PM.
Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing he is at peace, reunited with his beloved wife, and in the presence of the Lord he faithfully served. His legacy will live on in the lives he built, the love he gave, and the faith he never wavered from.
The family is being served by Butler Funeral Home-Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL 62629.
Until we meet again.
