Arthur spent his working life in the building trades. He was a carpenter contractor in Gardner, MA. In 1971, he fulfilled a lifelong dream with his wife Elizabeth and moved to the Cape, building the family home next door to the homes of his sister and brother-in-law, and his cousin and her husband – all the closest of friends. He built a business on the lower Cape, and served as the Orleans Building Inspector for three years.
A passionate sportsman, Arthur was an award-winning trap shooter, hunter, fisherman and birdwatcher. He spent countless hours hunting and fishing on the Cape, and at the family camp in Royalston, MA.
An avid reader, Arthur always said he was going to write a book when he retired. In fact, he wrote five books; three novels; a memoir; and a fictionalized memoir of his experience in basic training, Prelude to War which is in the library collection of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. He also authored a collection of poems, two of which have been published.
Arthur, Tud, Art, Dad, Papa, Gramps, Grandpa will be missed by all who knew him and remembered him for his whistle and wit; harmonica playing; breaking into song at unexpected moments; his great storytelling and recitation of poems and limericks; his honesty, integrity and loyalty; his beautiful craftsmanship; his passion as an outdoorsman…but most of all for his deep love of his family and friends.
