

Claire Ellen (Macy) Dubis, 83, passed away Saturday August 1, 2015 surrounded by her husband and children, after a long illness. The matriarch of the family, Claire was the true essence of a strong and loving woman. Raised in Boston, she attended Girls Latin School and graduated from Gould Academy in Bethel, ME. She continued her education at Colby College where she graduated, majoring in Chemistry, in 1953. Her first job was working at Harvard Medical in the research Lab.
A summer break in Chatham would change her destiny when she met her sweetheart in front of the Chatham Lighthouse. They married on September 18, 1954 first living in Victoria, Texas where Bob was stationed in the Air force and then returned home to Chatham. Claire was an entrepreneur. Helping her father in B. F. Macy’s on Boylston Street in Boston, starting new businesses, including The Monomoyic Gift Shop, D’s Char Broil, The Dream Motel, and the family business J. W. Dubis & Sons, Inc. She was a math teacher at Harwich Middle school and substitute teacher for many years.
Active in the community, Claire served on the Personnel Board of the Town of Chatham and was known to speak up at Town Meetings. Her civic interests included The Chatham Methodist Church, Wesleyans, Monomoy Branch of Cape Cod Hospital Aid, Past Matron of Pleiades Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Mother Advisor in The Orleans Chapter of Rainbow Girls, and Treasurer for 20 years of the Chatham Garden Club, Red Hat Ladies of Naples, and Saint Martin’s Club. A Volunteer at the Chatham Atwood house Claire liked to tell people about living on North Beach and the enjoyment she had having a family camp. Claire loved golf and was a Member of both Eastward Ho! Country Club of Chatham and Glen Eagle Golf Club of Naples, FL. An active member of the Nine Holers, Treasurer and in charge of the “Rules” she was an awesome putter! An avid bridge player, she was extremely organized and precise.
Above all else Claire was the strength of her family with unconditional love. Generous, always planning vacations to NH, cruises and her favorite destinations Key West and Naples the term “clanning” is the essence of the family. Deep into traditions, she was the hostess for clam bakes, holiday celebrations, cocktail parties, reunions, and pool parties. She never missed a birthday or anniversary. Her favorite place to be was her cottage in Chocorua, NH, which was built in 1906 by her Grandfather.
Claire was the daughter of Eugene B. Macy and Alberteen Ellen (Norton) Macy and older sister to Donna Jean (Macy) Kirby. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert G. Dubis and her little Shitzu, Mei-ling. Daughter, Robin Ellen (Dubis) Zibrat and son, Eugene Walter Dubis, their spouses Mark R. Zibrat and Pamela G. (Lombard) Dubis. Her grandchildren, Robert C. Dubis (Anne ) , Jennifer E. (Zibrat) Haffner (Hellmut), Melissa G. (Dubis) O’Leary (Sean) and Jacqueline M. Zibrat-Long (Jonathan). Her adoring great grandchildren, Owen, Isabelle, Gavin, Carter, Ryder, Benjamin, Hadley, Dillon and Christian. Her nephews and sisters sons, Randal B. Moore (Lisa) and Douglas T. Moore (Sandra) and many loving nieces, nephews and family members.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 6 from 4-7 p.m. at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA. A funeral celebration of Claire’s life will be held at the Chatham Methodist Church, Main Street, Chatham, MA Friday, August 7 at 11:00 AM, followed by a private family burial at Peoples Cemetery.
