

Don was born in Lincoln, Maine in 1929 to Bertha Ricker Stevens and Elmer Freemont Stevens. He retired from Yale University in 1994 after 20 years as Labor Relations Director. He had previously worked at Chase Brass and Copper in Waterbury, CT, Monsanto Chemical in West Springfield, MA and Brock Hall Dairy in Hamden, CT.
Don graduated from Mattanamcook Academy in Lincoln, ME and U. of Maine in Orano. While in college he joined Beta Theta Pi and played varsity football, as well as being a senior skull. Don also served his country for two years in the U.S. Army.
Don leaves behind his wife Elizabeth (Betsey) to whom he was married 62 years and his children: Lisa Cantu of Miami, FL, Lauren Bolen and her husband Michael of Blue Bell, PA, Tracey Richard and her husband Blane of Portland, TX and Todd Stevens of Trumbull, CT. He also leaves seven grandchildren: Elizabeth & David Cantu, Charles & Courtney Richard, Kathryn, Alex and Lilly Bolen.
The ocean, beaches and natural environment brought Don and Betsey to Chatham after retirement. He volunteered at the Atwood House Museum, the Railroad Museum and Elder Services. He belonged to the Retired Men’s Group, the Chatham Walkers and the UU Meeting House. A celebration of Don’s life will be held in August.
