
Edward “Ned” Jacob passed away peacefully at Liberty Commons Rehabilitation and Skilled Care Center in Chatham on February 15, 2011 in his 94th year of life. He was born June 13, 1917 to the late, Richard Jacob and Pauline (Heitner) Jacob. He spent his childhood in Passaic with his parents and his sister, Ruth Jacob Adams. He graduated from Passaic High School in 1935 and worked in the insurance business. Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, the former Marjorie L. Kendrick of Chatham.
He served in the 9th Infantry of the Army during World War II, receiving the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters.
After his discharge from the service, he moved to Chatham and worked for several local contractors, eventually opening an estate maintenance business, from which he retired in 1982.
During his lifetime, he enjoyed many activities and pastimes, including raising rabbits and goats, (Past President of the Cape Cod Goat Club), playing chess (Member of the Tuesday Night Chess Club), playing ping-pong with the “gang at Dick Lumpkin’s” and tennis with the COA Tennis Group. He was an avid bridge player.
Ned and Marj enjoyed square and ballroom dancing and were well know for being the “first on the dance floor” at the Chatham Band Concert on Friday nights during the summer.
Ned served his community by being a member of the Chatham Finance Committee for a number of years.
Ned spent many hours sport fishing in Pleasant Bay, catching a record-breaking 61 ½ lb striped bass in 1963. He was an active member of the Cape Cod Salties sport fishing club.
He served as President of the Chatham Conservation Foundation for many years and cleared and maintained the nature trails still enjoyed by many.
Ned was very sociable and enjoyed meeting his friends at the former Chatham Shop every weekday to discuss local news. He always had a joke to tell. Anyone who ever met him has heard the story of Foot, Foot-Foot and Foot-Foot-Foot, probably more than once.
He is survived by his daughters, Eleanor Smith and her husband, Warren of Harwich, Gail Eldredge and her husband Terry, of Chatham and a son, Bart Jacob and his wife, Laurene of Austin Texas. He is also survived by six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson and several nieces and nephews.
