
CHATHAM – George W. Hayden, 94, of Chatham, passed away on June 30, 2012 after a long illness. He was the son of the late Robert and Lena (Whitney) Hayden. George was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Priscilla (Buttrey).
George was born March 12, 1918 in Woonsocket, RI , graduated from Holliston High School and attended the Franklin Institute in Boston. He was a supervisor of mechanical maintenance at New England Electric, Providence, RI.
George was instrumental in organizing the Plainville Athletic League and was a past member of King Philip Regional High School, School Committee. He was very active, enjoyed gardening, saltwater fishing, and was an original member of the Snowmobile Association of Massachusetts. He was a member of the U.S. Army 101st Yankee Division during World War II, where he received a Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars, a Silver Star, and the 12th Battlefield Commission of WWII. He was also a past Quarter Master of the Brown-James-Buck Post VFW in Chatham.
He is survived by his daughter Adrianne Sharpe and her husband Philip; son, George Hayden and his wife Terry; two grandchildren, Kendra Sharp Read and Leah Whitney Hayden.

A graveside service will be held at 11am on Monday, July 16, 2012 at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA.
