Hazel Marie Byrne passed away on February 5, 2026 at the remarkable age of 99, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion to family. Born on October 7, 1926, she was proud to be a long time resident of the Bronx and then Yonkers before moving to Chatham in 1976.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Raymond J. Byrne, her son, Raymond J. Byrne Jr. and her daughter-in-law Maria Romano Byrne.
Hazel was a loving and devoted mother to Paul Byrne (Diane), Mary Colette Byrne, and Jayne Byrne (Tim Orcutt). She was a proud and caring grandmother to David Byrne (Audrey), Regina MacKay (Greg), Daniel Byrne (Danielle), Lauren Byrne, Tara Feeney (Paul), and Elizabeth Byrne Orcutt, and a cherished great-grandmother of seven and great-great-grandmother of one.
Hazel was known for her wonderful sense of style and grace, especially her signature pearls, which became a beloved part of her look. She took great pride in her early career at Best & Co. on Fifth Avenue in New York City, and later in her work at the Cullingboard and Sandi’s Diner in Chatham, where her warmth, humor, and work ethic left a lasting impression.
A true lover of animals, some would say even more than people, Hazel rescued many animals over the years, including one memorable rescue from Lighthouse Beach. She faithfully fed the birds each day and, though less enthusiastically, the squirrels as well. Her compassion for animals was a defining part of who she was.
Those wishing to honor Hazel’s memory are invited to make a donation to the Animal Rescue League in Brewster. A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring, when the birds return.
Above all, Hazel will be remembered for her generous heart, her quick wit, and the deep love she held for her family. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her, and her memory will live on through the many generations she so lovingly nurtured.
