Laurence Stevens

Born in Beverly, MA on June 20, 1921, Larry was the son of Mary and Ernest Stevens. He lived in Salem, where he graduated from high school in 1940. An avid athlete, Larry was inducted into the Salem High School Hall of Fame. He captained both his basketball and baseball teams. His basketball team won the Essex County Championship and played in the New England Basketball Tournament in Glen Falls, New York. Larry also captained the 1940 baseball team winning the Essex County Championship and he played in the Eastern Massachusetts Finals at Braves Field.

After proudly serving in the United States Coast Guard during World War II, he opened two bakeries in Peabody and became the head baker at the Massachusetts General Hospital for 25 years. He spent summers with his family in Harwich, where he built the home that he resided in for 50 years with his wife Barbara. On Cape, he became a Eucharistic minister and taught CCD at the Holy Redeemer Parish, in Chatham. He was also a member of the Harwich Port Golf Club.

He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara Stevens and his three children Susan Saracusa and husband Richard, Brian Stevens and wife Jadene and Judy Walsh and husband Kevin. Also surviving Larry are his grandchildren Theresa Schille and husband R.J., Kristina Lucy and husband Mark, Matthew Walsh, Lauren Walsh, Alexis Stevens and Ashley Stevens, as well as his niece Anne Gothier, nephew Thomas MacMahon and wife Margaret, great niece Kelly Hollinhead and husband James, great-grand children Victoria, Isabella and Katerina Schille and his great-grand niece and nephew Ava and Jace Hollinhead.

Visting hours will be held from 4 - 6 PM Friday March 26, 2010 at Nickerson Funeral Home 87 Crowell Rd., Chatham, MA 02633. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 AM Saturday March 27 in Holy Redeemer Church in Chatham., burial will follow at Island Pond Cemetery, Harwich, MA.
