Marie I Farrell

Age 97 • Yarmouth, MA

Marie I. Farrell’s funeral Mass will be held 10 am on Monday November 13, 2023 at St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown, MA.

Marie was born in 1925 and raised in Watertown by her loving parents, Harvard and U.S. Olympic Track Coach Eddie Farrell and Isabelle Driscoll Farrell, both formerly of South Boston. She adored her World War II hero brothers who predeceased her, Edward and David, sharing their love of Cape Cod and family gatherings.

Amateur athletics were central to Marie’s life through school, summer camps, and Sargent College. She was an award-winning educator and coach at Boston State College. Admittedly a lousy cook, she used her oven to store her Betty Crocker, but was quick to correct and sometimes praise her nieces’ and nephews’ abilities, whether swimming, skating, skiing, golfing, running, throwing, or bowling, while joyfully engaging with them.

Marie greatly enjoyed travel throughout the United States and around the world, spending time in Florida after her retirement, always happy to return to Yarmouth where she resided since the 1950s.

On April 30, 2023 Marie’s nieces and nephews gathered around her bedside. There was the usual chatter and activity as we checked in with her and each other. True to her witty humor and indomitable spirit, she asked “Is this my funeral party?” Of course not, dear Aunt Marie. But she died peacefully the next day.

Our family appreciates all the wonderful attention Aunt Marie received these past few years from her devoted caregivers.

Marie is survived by her loving nieces and nephews: Pat Farrell (Tom Javits) of New York City; Sue Ann Farrell of San Diego, CA; Mary Beth Farrell Kirkpatrick of Greenwich, CT; Shea Farrell of Bethel, CT; David Farrell (Amy Rokicki) of South Chatham; Dotty Farrell Shelton (Stan Shelton) of Wayland; John Farrell (Bette Derose) of Mansfield; as well as fourteen grand nieces and grand nephews; plus seven great grand nieces and great grand nephews; and was predeceased by James Farrell (Martha Pyle Farrell) of Wayland.
