

It is with deep sadness that the family of Paul Lucas announce his passing on February 2, 2017 at the age of 80. Born on December 26, 1936 in Chatham, he was the son of Pauline and Joseph Lucas, and brother Joe Lucas. In 1958 he married Brenda Hackett and together they raised 2 children Ted and Cindy.
Paul graduated from Chatham High School where he developed a passion for basketball and baseball, both as a player and coach. He was an avid Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots fan his entire life. Lucas joined the United States Marine Corps after high school in 1955, later ranked as a Corporal. He was based at Camp Lejeune and his duties brought him in the next 3 years to many places throughout the world.
Following his military posting Paul Worked for 35 years as a trap fisherman and Captained his own boats and crew, forming Lucas Trap Company. Along with his right hand man, Richard Matteson ("Chape") they harvested many pounds of fish from the weirs in Nantucket Sound. When he retired, he had more time for shell fishing, bird carving ,traveling to Florida, playing his guitar and spending time with his 5 grandchildren.
He was known as Captain Eelgrass for 10 years, and, along with the band Fiddlesticks, organized a fundraiser for local charities. His infectious sense of humor and wit made the events a huge success. Paul also enjoyed his mornings at Larry's PX where he discussed sports, local issues and fishing with other regulars.
Paul is survived by his wife of 58 years Brenda (Hackett) Lucas, his son Ted Lucas, daughter Cindy (Lucas) Devlin, and her husband, Steve Devlin. He was the loving grandfather (Poppy) of Jessica (Lucas) Allen and her husband John H. Allen III of Charleston; John Devlin; Scott Devlin; Matthew Lucas and Jason Lucas, all of Chatham. He will be deeply missed by his beloved Sisters-in-law Diane Browning; Rhonda Hackett along with Linda Lucas and countless cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caring and attentive Pleasant Bay Nursing home staff. Much kindness and respect was shown to Paul. His family is extremely appreciative.
A wake will be held on Wednesday, February 8 from 4:00-7:00 at Nickerson Funeral Home on Crowell Road in Chatham. A Mass of Christian burial will follow on Thursday February 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with a burial in Union Cemetery.
