Phil was born on April 30, 1932 in Hartford, CT, the son of Sylvia and Charles Pratt a schoolteacher at the Loomis School. He attended Loomis and later Harvard University (he was a member of the Owl Club, swim and track and field teams) from which he graduated in 1953. Following his father’s footsteps, he became a math teacher, swim coach and later Director of Admissions. Phil’s career began at the Punahou School in Hawaii where he taught and relished the opportunity to learn body surfing. From there he taught at the Hill School in Pottstown PA and four years later moved his family to the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey for the remainder of his career. In 1992, he retired and moved to Chatham, MA. Phil was married to Cynthia Nichols in 1957 until her death in 1992. In 1994 he married Carrie Van Vleck who passed away suddenly two years later.
Whether spending his days on the tennis court, being President of Chatham Beach and Tennis Club, challenging his family with math problems, walking his dog, Misty through town or swimming in the waters off Chatham, Phil lived an active life. He was well known for his dry sense of humor and 5’ 18” stature. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. He leaves behind his two daughters, Elizabeth Amory of Dover, MA and Susan (Dave) Clark of Madison, Ct and his son, Philip (Robin) Pratt Jr. of Newton, MA and his 9 grandchildren. There will be a private family service at a later date.
