

Doris Bailey Evans, age 82, of Chattanooga passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2012. Mrs. Evans was the widow of Walter T. Evans Jr. She was the daughter of the late Jess C. and Louise O. Bailey and was predeceased by her brother Jess Lebron Bailey. She was a graduate of Lakeview High School Class of 1947.
Mrs. Evans retired from the Internal Revenue Service. She was the first woman in the state of Tennessee to fill the position of Revenue Officer. That position had always been filled by men only. Mrs. Evans has written a book telling of the obstacles she overcame as the first woman to fill the position, truly a trail blazer for women in the Collection Division, and at the present time it is estimated that 50% of the positions are filled by women.
Mrs. Evans is survived by a daughter, Freda Carol Steinberger and grandson Reuben Traite of New York City; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Darlene Evans; and grandson, Jacob Evans of Ringgold, Georgia.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 1 PM at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. John Andrus and Rev. Eric Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be John Roberts, Floyd Chamberlain, Danny Cochran, Chuck Morgan, Charlie Morgan, Jerin Morgan, Ricky Prater and Randy Eldridge. Honorary Pallbearers will be Herb Pace, Ken Mintey, and Larry Bass, who were all former co-workers with Mrs. Evans at the Internal Revenue Service, and Larry Malone. Procession will be led by son, Tom Evans, and grandsons, Jacob Evans and Reuben Traite.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 21, 2012 from 4 PM to 7 PM and on Monday, October 22, 2012 from 4 PM to 7 PM at the funeral home.
