

Stephen Lawrence Douglass, age 79, died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at his home. He was born on August 8, 1946, in Waterloo, New York, the son of Nellie Irene (Thorpe) and Bernard Charles Douglass. Steve was a 1964 graduate of Waterloo High School. He then graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology, focusing on electrical engineering, and moving on to his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Case Western Reserve. Steve was resident of Newbury for over forty-eight years and was an expert electrical engineer, master tinkerer, and affectionately known as a mad scientist. On May 23, 1970, he married Mary Louise Pinard. Steve worked for the former Diamond Shamrock of Concord, Ohio, moving on to the former Lucerne Products and Thermotion of Mentor, Ohio. At Thermotion he obtained five licensed patents for items he designed and crafted.
Steve was a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying, fishing, sailing, and skiing. He was an avid reader and loved a good science fiction novel. Some of his favorites were Lord of the Rings and Dune. Steve will forever be remembered for his intelligence, kindness and patience.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mary Jane Minnich. Survivors include his wife of nearly fifty-six years, Mary Lou Douglass of Newbury, Ohio; two sons, James B. “Jamie” (Michelle) Douglass of Greendale, Indiana, and Sean L. Douglass of East Lansing, Michigan; three grandchildren, Mathew, Caitlin, and Rowan; and four step-grandchildren, Kyla, Felicia, Emili, and Gavin.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May17, 2026, from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Gattozzi and Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chesterland, Ohio. A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 18th at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to parkinson.org.
