In loving memory of a devoted father, distinguished educator, and faithful servant of God, we announce with profound sorrow the passing of our beloved father, Basim Hanna Karakoshi.
For forty remarkable years, he served as a dedicated respected professor at the University of Baghdad, shaping generations of students with wisdom, patience, and passion. He earned his Master of Arts degree in English Linguistics from Indiana State University, Bloomington, Indiana, a milestone that reflected his lifelong devotion to scholarship and language. Teaching was not merely his profession, it was his calling. His published work is preserved in both British and European libraries.
Beyond academia, he was known for his warm spirit and irresistible charm. He always had a joke ready to lighten the moment and a helping hand extended to anyone in need. His kindness knew no bounds. One of the most cherished stories of his life occurred when, among a vast crowd gathered in Baghdad to greet Mother Teresa, she approached him personally and shook his hand, an unforgettable moment that reflected the gentle goodness that radiated from him.
He was a devoted husband, preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Mrs. Nadia AlSaiegh (2024). Their marriage was a testament to enduring love, faith, and partnership, even amidst the inevitable disagreements life brings.
He is survived by his four loving daughters:
Dr. Ghada, Dr. Reem, Mrs. Dena (Leo), and Ms. Zeena; and by his cherished grandsons, Elia and Jonathan. He raised his daughter with love, respect and christian faith, taking immense pride in seeing them grow into accomplished, faithful women. Nothing brought him greater joy than witnessing their growth in character, education, and faith.
He found joy in teaching, traveling, reading, and faithfully following current events. His faith guided his steps, shaped his character, and anchored his family.
Though our hearts grieve his passing, we rejoice in the extraordinary life he lived and the countless lives he touched. His legacy of love, learning, laughter, and faith will live on in his family, his students, and all who were blessed to know him.
