Papi Carlos was born on April 22, 1928, in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Before immigrating to the United States, he worked for the United Fruit Company in Guatemala, where he began building the strong work ethic that defined his life. In 1969, he courageously immigrated to Chicago in search of a better life for himself and his family. Through hard work and determination, he built a life rooted in perseverance, sacrifice, and love. He worked for various companies over the years, including IBM, and took great pride in providing for his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his former spouse Maria Del Fina Higueros, affectionately known as Mami Fina, and two children who passed away before the birth of his other children.
Papi Carlos is survived by his seven children: Irma Rodriguez, Carlos Chavez, Edgar Chavez, Dora Flora Chavez, Beatrice Zeno, Edwin Chavez, and Byron Chavez. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life. He was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, roles that meant everything to him.
Known for his incredible work ethic, Papi Carlos balanced a serious and determined nature with an unforgettable sense of humor. He loved making jokes, giving advice, and encouraging those around him. His softer side especially came out with the younger generations—his great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren—who brought out his warmth and playfulness.
He had a passion for staying active and could often be found at the gym, swimming, or working out well into his later years. A proud Chicagoan, he was a lifelong fan of Chicago sports and one of the biggest Chicago Bulls fans you could ever meet.
Papi Carlos leaves behind a legacy of resilience, laughter, wisdom, and love. His life story is one of courage, family, and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
