

Francis Paul “Frank” Surge, 91, of Chicago, IL, died in Chicago on March 4, 2023, after a brief hospitalization. He was born in Buhl, MN on September 27, 1931, to Paul and Florence (nee Belfiore) Surge.
A retired teacher of English, Frank was a graduate of the University of Minnesota (BA and MA) and he enjoyed reading and discussing books on a wide range of subjects. He also enjoyed dancing and met his surviving spouse, Michael Feinerman, at a country dance class in 1992. Frank retired from teaching in 1986 after a career that included teaching in Paynesville, MN, St. Paul, MN, Springfield, IL and most recently Glenbard East in Lombard, IL.
In addition to his work, Frank was an early member of Dignity, a ministry to LGBT Catholics, and was the first elected president of the Chicago chapter of that organization. In 1989 he was received into the Episcopal Church. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the parish of the Episcopal Church of the Atonement in Chicago.
Frank is survived by his loving partner Michael Feinerman; his loving sisters Marie (the late Robert) Snyder and Andrea (Dean) Cameron; and many loving nieces and nephews, extended family, and treasured friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Victoria Surge, and his niece, Paula Strand.
Funeral services and inurnment are scheduled for 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at The Episcopal Church of the Atonement, 5749 North Kenmore Ave., Chicago, IL 60660.
