Thinking of you my dear friend.  I have missed your presence . 

Last week was the one year anniversary of Ioana's passing, and I want to honor the small part I knew of her life.

I played in Maracatu PDX with Ioana, and after Covid did not re-join the community and musicians who went on to become Portland Samba as did Ioana.  So I did not know of her death until a few months ago when I ran into a fellow band member who told me in the grocery store.  It was such a shock.  

I didn't spend a lot of time with her outside of the band, but when I did, I enjoyed her smarts, her sense of humor, and her worldliness.   She checked in on my when Covid hit to make sure I was doing Ok, and we met for coffee at the "end" of Covid, the last time I saw her.  Though I rarely saw her after the band, I loved knowing she was there.  I'm so sad I did not check in with her.  

Like so many of her loved ones, I miss her, and am grateful for knowing her.

Ioana Vivall (far right, picture from my wedding to Kristy McDonald Myers ) passed away one year ago today. We hadn't been in touch for a few years, so I didn't find out until a couple days ago. Ioana was a great friend to me during what I now realize were some of the most formative years of my life. Ioana was someone who could make friends wherever she went with her quick smile, her laughter, and her enthusiasm. And if you were fortunate enough to be her friend you could learn so much from her sharp intellect, wisdom earned from experience, and boundless curiosity. Ioana worked hard, earned respect in several fields, traveled the world, was the life of many parties, and left an indelible positive mark on countless lives. While I was not the friend to her I should have been, I will try to shine the light she brought into my life on to others.

So sorry to hear about this. Remember her energy and sharp wit. Hope she has found peace.

Ioana, we shared so much of what we both loved, traveling, philosophy, literature, music, flowers, pastries and much more.  You claimed a place deep in my heart.  Stay there forever, with all your dreams and aches, laughter and tears.  It is our journey together all throughout this life and beyond.  Rest well my dear friend.  I miss you so much. 

Fly high tender soul. You are now One with the eternal existence and the limitless love of God in your new journey.

What I do remember is your magnificent old wisdom that you inherited in that young body and young mind of yours . I don’t think you were more then 19 years old when we met. I knew then that you are beyond special in a million ways  possible.

I remember her playing in my backyard with my two granddaughters. She seemed as innocent as they were, not a care in the world, a child’s world.  She was lovely throughout. Anyone who met her knows she was a special person. We will all miss you. 

Dear Ioana, you were so incredibly brave,  really, carving so many paths of your own. So brave and still tender and open-hearted. I’ve been thinking a lot about what beautiful and immense vulnerability and strength you walked in. 

The first time we met was at a party for international students, everyone was sitting and talking and you were the first to dance. I actually remember you seemed a bit timid, and then wow, you let it go. I just love how you let yourself experience joy and knew how to seize the moment. I can somehow still hear you laughing and picture your sparkly eyes and winking grin.

I love and admire how you were the most welcoming and inclusive. Always genuinely curious about people. You brought someone from the outside of the circle into the middle of it. Your warmth let people feel they belong.

I love you. Thank you for sharing some of the depths of your heart with me. I will forever see your playful, kind, sparkling eyes when I think of you. I am changed for knowing you and also losing you. Your spirit lives on through so many of us. What a treasure you are. 


When I met Ioana in Chicago, I was immediately charmed by her sweetness, her positivity, and capacity to make others laugh. She was always ready for a new adventure or trip, and I also enjoyed complaining about boys together. I remember this amazing trip with her, Kai, Anna, and Banu - I got to know her better there, and she was such a fun travel companion! I also remember fondly a girls' pajama weekend, where we all stayed together at Anna's place, made delicious food and brushed our teeth together making funny faces. I will miss these and other fond memories, that I will keep close to my heart. 

Forever our angel , a gentle soul , a soft voice , too kind , and a smile that melts your heart .
We are so heart broken and saddened to hear you are gone so soon . You will forever live in our hearts and your memory will be cherished for years to come .

Ioana and I matched on Ancestry.com as cousins.  I don’t have a lot of relatives in the states and Ioana came to our wedding as family and made our day so incredibly perfect. 

As a Romanian immigrant, I met Ioana on Ancestry.com and was ecstatic to find out I have such an incredible cousin living in my state! We met up and had an instant family connection and trust in each other. I felt like I had just won the lottery finding her. My newly found cousin was not only completely adorable but she was smart as a whip, funny and sassy, a world traveler and a creative being. She asked me “Since we are family that means I’m invited to your wedding, right?” Of course she was. Not only did she come and help make my special day so memorable but she tore up the dance floor to a Romanian Hora dance (circle dance) with our friends and family. She was a beautiful and graceful dancer, dancing from her heart and soul. I will forever remember our hangouts with such fondness and the last time we talked on the phone laughing hysterically with her for an hour. Ioana was completely unforgettable she had a face, grace and energy that lit up any room she walked into. My love for her is eternal. She will always be a source of inspiration for me. I love you forever, my sweet, beautiful cousin. 

My beautiful, talented, intelligent, caring, friend. I will forever carry you in my heart and cherish our wonderful memories we had together. I will always remember that beautiful soul and smile. It has been an honor of a lifetime having called you my amiga del alma here on earth. May you bring the heavens and angels all of the love and warmth we had with you, for we were the lucky ones. I love you. 


Ioana - A bright light and role model for our CI Champions.   Getting to know you was a blessing.   Many condolences for your family and friends.    

Ioana was one of the first friends I made in Chicago, and we quickly bonded over our cultural background, love of music and travel. Through the years every time we saw each other felt like no time had passed. I have always admired her sharp sense of humor, curious mind, adventurous spirit, and ability to live life on her own terms. I am grateful to Ioana for the experiences we had together, friends she brought into my life and positive impact she made on everyone who had a privilege of knowing her. I will keep her spirit alive in my heart ❤

What a beautiful soul! She was a lover of nature, but also so natural herself - so genuine. Moments where she'd be a bit shy, then like on cue there's be a feisty, funny comment with the most wonderful accent that would make you belly laugh. I remember Ioana gave my future wife tips (warnings?) on dating me at a party. Like the whisper in her ear kind where it must have been half joke / half serious cause I couldn't tell if it was a smile or a smirk between all the laughing. Always trying to help, but also not holding back when doing it - also called being a good friend. Or maybe she just wanted to be a future bridesmaid by helping her two friends get together? So thankful we had her in our lives. She will be missed.

Ioana was one of the most beautiful people I have ever met. We met at DTNA and I am blessed to have known her in this life. She uplifted me in so many ways and always left me feeling better about myself after we spent time together. She was a true friend. She taught me how to see beauty in this world, how to live in the moment, how to dance. I will always miss her.

Ioana was one of the kindest, the smartest, and most beautiful people and she touched the lives of so many people who will remember her. She will not be forgotten. I love you always.

Ioana Vivall in my memory is an abundance of joy and colors, love and generosity. She loved nature, adventure, music, history and she really knew how to seize the day. She sought to learn and grow at all times. When she visited me in Stockholm she chose to stay in a unique hotel on a boat. Ioana showed respect for everyone, including children. 

Ioana, you left us richer for having known you. May your soul travel to a forever peaceful place, May the waves of the oceans sing your song, May God’s grace embrace you! 

Ioana was as effervescent, refreshing, and fun as the Prosecco she enjoyed at many a celebration. May she always be remembered this way. Wishing her friends and family strength and grace as her light is dearly missed.

Ioana and I met via a group started online by mutual friends who share a love of music. We quickly connected and would message with one another, becoming fast friends. She was the kind of person you felt you had known forever; extremely genuine, uplifting, warm, funny, full of energy and life.

Ioana was such a passionate, creative and fun person.  Your day was better after being with her.   She did not hesitate to volunteer her time to employee betterment.  From roadmap initiatives, company culture, the Finance Club and many more.  I enjoyed hearing about all her travels, seeing the latest crochet booties she made for her friends’ babies and virtually meeting other’s cats.  Her Daimler Truck family will miss her dearly!

Ioana was an integral part of my life when I first moved to the U.S.
She was full, bright, and elegant.
We enjoyed many picnics, teas, meals and desserts and shared precious memories of one another spending our childhoods elsewhere in the world.
I am so saddened for not being able to share more stories with her, but will always remember and cherish our memories together.


It’s difficult to find words to express my connection, admiration, and love for precious Ioana. She has always been one of my angels. 

I wrote this poem for her.

Dance your dance with the stars my li’l one

Ioana was part of my work family, and we had so much fun together, while also accomplishing a lot. She was very bright, always learning, and lit up a room with her smile and genuine warmth. I will cherish the memories of our weekly 1 on 1 time, where I learned so much about her life experiences and her ambitions. I could post many team pictures here, but one of our favorite outings was a team rolling skating afternoon. I will always remember the joy Ioana brought to those around her. 

Ioana was sweet, friendly, beautiful, and brave. She was my friend, my neighbor, and my bridesmaid. I have many fond memories with her. She will be truly missed by us, but I'm sure she'll bring more happiness and beauty to Heaven.

I remember meeting Ioana at Adina’s hilariously themed white trash party. We were all dressed ridiculous and she told me I was an incredible human being- which really stuck with me. A few months later she was trying to prove to me that the women’s bathroom was way nicer than the mens by grabbing my hand and taking me in! She was right- there was a complete separate bar and lounge! She was such a wonderful human being. I will never forget her.

My wife and I met Ioana at a dinner as she, Kai Orton, and several friends were visiting Boston.  It was down the street from Fenway Park, on a beautiful day at The Elephant Walk.  Ioana swept in, looking lovely, introduced herself, and entranced us during the evening.  We kept in touch via social media.  Joined her at a lovely brunch in Portland.  And last saw her at a breakfast in New Orleans on a chilly New Year's Eve morning.  Always a bit shy at first, but gradually displaying that wonderful mind and beautiful smile.  We grew to love her and will miss her.  The thought occurred today that it would have been fun to take her fly fishing.  I think she may have put that idea in my head.  It would be like her.

Ioana was always so bright, so kind, so smart. I am lucky to have known her. Fly high lovely spirit and thank you for all your grace. 

Ioana was a cherished colleague and I am deeply saddened for your loss. Her kindness, positivity, and laughter always brightened up my day and she will be dearly missed.

We are fortunate to have played music with Ioana. She will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Ioana was always smiling, always giving, and always helping. I knew Ioana through the Finance Book Club and many hallway conversations. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Ioana was such a delightful member of our team - determined, dedicated, driven, and always updating us on fun weekend activities such as festivals and art exhibits, encouraging us to get out and enjoy them.  She had so much passion for so many things! She will be missed by so many. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Ioana lived life to the fullest, she loved music above all, traveling, loved her friends and family. She always had the brightest smile and the most recognizable laugh. She was generous and caring and passionate about politics and people’s rights.

She taught me that I have to have 6 months of savings at all times to start duty, 18months ideally when I was living paycheck to paycheck. She was the one that got me to start saving. 

 She was extremely curious and first thing she did when she came over for play dates was dig into my grandma’s armoire of treasures from when she was younger looking for her fancy scarfs, dresses, jewelry. My grandma was not a fan of her curiosity when it came to digging through her closet but she loved Ioana no the less :)

She was my first friend since I was 2 as our grandmas used to walk us around side by side in strollers.

She will always live on in my heart ❤️.
