Just learning of Juan’s passing is heartbreaking to know that such a beautiful soul has left us.  I had the privilege of spending time with him on break during my training for Aquatics staff and he was always focused on improving his skills and he was so dedicated and loved serving and helping others.  He was a true professional but his passion & kind spirit was so overwhelming it made you feel good just being around him.  I will miss his smile and the level of excitement and excellence he brought to our parks.  RIL you will NEVER be forgotten!  

They say friends are the family you don't have, I could not agree more. If the pain I'm feeling is any indication of how much fam you are, then I have never lost a closer relative. From today on you are no longer with us but everything I admire and learned from you will live through me and my kids and my kids kids for ever. I love you and miss you and we will again be connected when my time comes.

Knew so much, shared so much, and taught many how to live and be themselves. 

Our condolences to the family/loved ones of coach Juan. May he rest peacefully in God's loving embrace. He will surely be missed.



At this moment all I can think about is what a kind & giving person Juan was. When I first met him he made me feel immediately comfortable. He was a great listener, funny, and genuine. There are few people you meet who only wish the best for you, and if they can help in any way they are glad to. That’s the kind of person Juan was. He looked out for others. Our text thread has many moments in which he would randomly check-in. He gave me tips during my triathlon training and reached out to see if I was having a good time in Miami - a place he spoke about with passion. I am grateful for having had the chance to meet him. His presence will be missed. My sincerest condolences.

I only got to talk to Juan one time at Kenia’s bar. His ability to open to discuss about personal/cultural  issues and his kindness, his advices made me respect him the most. In one word, he was a GOOD person with no evil in his heart.

 I do have a regret. Not going with him to a Mana concert. We were suppose to plan something and go to a concert but due to the pandemic we never did. I’m sure we will when my time comes.  Because that’s the promise that Son of God made to us. That we will have eternal life after passing this one. 

To Kenia and Juan’s family. My deepest condolences. It is surreal, and we are all going to miss Juan. He is an Angel in heaven looking over all his family and friends.

You were my coach, my mentor, and eventually my friend. Whenever I needed advice, or simply someone to listen, you were always there. It didn’t matter if you were busy, you always made time for me. You taught me so much in swimming, but more importantly, you taught me life lessons in dedication, commitment, and perseverance that I continue to apply to this very day. Thank you so much for your wisdom and advice. Thank you. I miss you so much. I will always remember you, and everything you taught me. 

Thank you so much Coach Juan for not only teaching me how to swim but also what the meaning of being apart of a TEAM is. You will always be my favorite coach and I miss you so much! Thanks to you I can now pass along the lessons you taught me to my little sister and I'll think of you everytime we jump in that pool as I teach her to swim!
Being on the Shabbona Sharks swim team and having you as my coach are some of my favorite memories that I'll never forget.

I was fortunate enough to be able to share so many adventures with one of the most humblest and genuine friends. Any room he walked in he brightened up the room with his smile! It was never a dull or sad moment with Juan and I’m happy to have met such a beautiful soul!

Juan was such an integral part of my childhood and growing up. He inspired not only me, but the entire Shabbona Sharks family and community,  in many ways. Juan’s legacy will live on through every single life he’s touched.

When we met Juan we could not believe how selfless, caring and nurturing he was. He left a lasting impression on us and we will never forget the memories we had with him. We are sad our baby never had the opportunity to the meet Juan as we planned but we know for certain that we will raise our son with the characteristics Juan had because he was one of the best people we knew. Juan always had a great presence when he walked into any room. He didn’t need a costume. But wearing one definitely brightened the room. I will never forget the love, care, and partnership he gave to everyone especially me! I’ll miss you juan. 

Sorry for your loss .Juan was a great swimming coach for my sons Reynaldo & Diego Lainez and all of shabona kids. He was so nice like coach. But like a human was extraordinary many times I say to him thank you so much to be like he was. A week before he got he ‘s surgery . I was speaking with him and I say to him how my family appreciate him. Now only I can said. Thank Juan again. I never said goodbye you will with us in shabona forever ♾.

I spent my childhood swimming along side Juanito at Harrison Park. He was my first “boyfriend,” (whatever this meant for 9 and 10 year-olds ☺️). He was truly the most driven, positive, well-mannered, and kind guy at Harrison Park. No surprise he maintained his positive charisma as he grew into a man. I loved seeing him as a Captain where I also guarded, North Avenue. My deepest condolences to Juanito’s family. 

Growing up, everyone needs a role model that they can look up to and aspire to be like when they grow up. For me, this was Coach Juan. In failure and success, prosperity and hardship, Juan was always there for me with the same kindness and tenderness that someone shows to their own child. For him, everything was a learning opportunity to help me grow not only as an athlete, but more importantly as a person. Coach Juan was one of the rare individuals that you come across on this planet that is always willing to help, is always understanding of the situation, and finds joy and happiness in putting others first.

I’m still having difficulty processing his passing, almost refusing to even believe it, but for the rest of my life I can only hope to be a tenth of the man he was, and be nothing but proud to say I knew Coach Juan from the very start of my development as a swimmer and as a person.

My best memory of Juan (Juanito) is when we where both at UIC for a regional meet for USA swimming. The meet was over and we were about to leave. I asked him how his family was doing. He pulled out his phone and showed me pictures of his niece who had been swimming in another regional meet. He let me know how wonderfully she had done. He was such a proud uncle

Juan was my Mate and my Captain at Montrose. Under him we learned so much. He inspired us. He gaves us words of encouragement. Can't was not in his vocabulary. Si Se Puede was his modo. He treated every body with respect and kindness. He taught me about south side culture. And that family was important. And no matter how tired or how long he worked; He always had time for God on Sunday. He was a true leader. El mas Chingon, el Rockero, el Fashionista, Chiquito Pero Picosa! Juan was one of the kindest souls I’ve ever met. His smile was contagious and my short week with him in Mexico taught me so much about patience. He had the ability to quickly diffuse a stressful situation and I admired that quality greatly. We are all so lucky to have had Juan in our lives. He had a very special aura and is truthfully a one of a kind person. Juan will be missed dearly and forever in our hearts.

Juan is leaving behind with me His Respectfulness, Smile, Charisma, Style and Loving Care as a Colleague but more as a Great Friend. I can not say how much i was pleased to enjoy your company, your Laughter an just how you lite up the room with your presence. I can hear your voice saying "Johnny B. House"!

Juan was the kindest soul, always smiling, always the one to bright up a room. I feel fortunate to have been able to work by his side, and I treasure all of the memories and lessons I learned from him. My deepest condolences to Juan and Kenia’s families. Sending all of my strength and love.

I don’t have to tell anyone who Juan was ! Once you met him once, it was game over. You were won over with his beautiful personality. I just want to thank all his family for helping raise such a wonderful person and allowing us to share and experience the Juanito we all knew. Thank you for all the great memories and wisdom you shared with us. The CPD family will miss you greatly. 

I met Juan through sports 37 in high school at SENN. He wasn’t only my instructor, but he became an amazing friend and mentor and he just became like part of the family! Always looked out for us! Always pushed us to do better and to be better! If he ever saw us down, he would do it all to lift our spirits and snap out of it! I’ll always remember that great smile anytime I saw him, and them dance moves at my Quince. You are deeply missed and loved by everyone. RIP BOSS 🙏

Juan was my boys swim coach . He was a great coach, mentor, & friend.. He was a kind and giving soul and genuinely cared about everyone.. I don’t think I ever saw him mad.
A fond memory is that he introduced my oldest to fashion - giving him clothes and such.  J would always be excited with whatever he gave him.   J wore the yellow Hollister shirt Juan gave him forever!! He could not bring himself to get rid of it!  Juan wrote letters of recommendations for the kids when needed and they were always sincere.  He went to the kids graduation parties .   We ran into Juan a few years ago and he lit up the room as always. His smile, his presence, his laughter commanded the room and drew many to him. I can’t imagine all the lives he touched.  It must be in the thousands- swimming lifeguarding, and life in general. Our family was blessed to have him part of our lives  and we will miss him greatly.  

I life guarded with Juan for 3 years at Montrose beach - he always had a smile on his face - took his job seriously - and was an all around  terrific guy -  my sincere condolences to his family - life guards for life !
