Miguel Maridueña

Miguel Alfonso Maridueña Miranda, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 29, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family.

Miguel was born on September 9, 1931, in Chobo-Guayas, Ecuador to Jacinto Maridueña Canales and Enriqueta Miranda de Maridueña. He was the first in his family to emigrate to the United States arriving in Chicago, Illinois in October 1954, at the age of 23, determined to work and provide for his family back home. His cousin, Alicia Speiser (Moran) and her husband, Dr. Bernard Speiser, welcomed him into their home. Miguel was forever grateful to them for their generosity and guidance. In January 1957, he registered with the United States Selective Service and was called to serve in the United States Army. He completed basic combat training at Fort Carson, Colorado, and was Honorably Discharged in December 1957.

Miguel began working for Dr. Speiser at Medical Chemicals Corp, a pharmaceutical company, soon after arriving in Chicago. The company would eventually change owners many times (LyphoMed, Fujisawa USA, APP Pharmaceuticals, Fresenius Kabi). Through the many mergers and acquisitions, Miguel remained a loyal employee, working his way up to becoming a manager in the packaging department. Miguel was well respected by both his co-workers and senior management until his retirement in 2012 at the age of 81.

In 1962, he chanced upon his future wife, Loly Escobar, as she walked to church. He silently watched her from afar but did not approach her. A few weeks later, much to Miguel’s surprise, Loly began to work at LyphoMed. They became fast friends, and, within the year, their friendship grew to a romantic relationship. Miguel and Loly were blessed with two children, Pegui and Jacinto Michael, aka “Chinto”.

He was a loyal husband and devoted father making sacrifices to ensure his children received an excellent education in the Catholic tradition and had the opportunity to pursue college educations. A caring grandfather, he was always at the ready to take his grandson Jordan to soccer practice or pick him up from summer camp. For his granddaughters Jade, Lily and Sadie, he gladly made trips to Disney World and relished in their joy as they posed for pictures with the Disney princesses.

A loving son and brother, he worked tirelessly to make sure each of his siblings and their families who wanted to emigrate to Chicago had both a welcoming a place to stay and a job awaiting them. A faithful servant leader, he selflessly gave his time, knowledge and experience to anyone within his family or circle of friends who needed help. He played an instrumental role in guiding many of his nieces and nephews to secure their first jobs or to become the first generation of college graduates in their family.

Miguel held many positions of influence within the Chicago Ecuadorean community including being a founding member and President of the Club Atletico Guayaquil Soccer Club and served as the Club’s Delegate to the Illinois State Soccer Association. He was long-time member of the Chicago Ecuadorean Lions Club and over the years held the offices of Secretary, Treasurer and President. He was an avid amateur photographer with his mother and sister Zoila serving as his first models. He was an accomplished, self-taught, orator being called upon to deliver heartfelt speeches at weddings, funerals, social club meetings, work outings and any other occasion where a poignant speech was needed.

Miguel’s long-lasting impact on the lives of those whom he touched will never be forgotten. Miguel is survived by his beloved wife Loly; his daughter Pegui, his son Michael and his daughter-in-law Ania; and his cherished grandchildren Jordan, Jade, Lily and Sadie. He is also survived by his sister Zoila, his brother Aurelio “Boli”, sisters- and brothers-in-law, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a multitude of other family and friends, too many to name. He was preceded in death by his parents Jacinto and Enriqueta, and his siblings, Hector, Gilberto, Dalinda, Esperanza, Lola and Carlos.

The family extends a heartfelt appreciation to the compassionate staff of Senior Helpers-Chicago on Harlem Ave., Villa Scalabrini Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Loyola Home Health for their gentle care and support of during Miguel’s final stage of his illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, October 8th from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Montclair-Lucania Funeral Home, located at 6901 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago, IL. The final visitation will be held on Monday, October 9th at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Giles Church, located at 1045 Columbian Ave., Oak Park, IL. Immediately thereafter, the Committal and Entombment Service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery and Mausoleum, located at 2905 Thatcher Ave., River Grove, IL.

Miguel Alfonso Maridueña Miranda, de 92 años, falleció el viernes 29 de septiembre de 2023 rodeado del amor de su familia.

Miguel nació el 9 de septiembre de 1931 en Chobo-Guayas, Ecuador, hijo de Jacinto Maridueña Canales y Enriqueta Miranda de Maridueña. Fue el primero de su familia en emigrar a los Estados Unidos llegando a Chicago, Illinois en octubre de 1954, a la edad de 23 años, decidido a trabajar y mantener a su familia en el Ecuador. Su prima, Alicia Speiser (Moran) y su esposo, el Dr. Bernard Speiser, le dieron la bienvenida a su casa. Miguel les estuvo eternamente agradecido por su generosidad y orientación. También le sobreviven su hermana Zoila, su hermano Aurelio "Boli", cuñados, así como numerosas sobrinas, sobrinos y una multitud de otros familiares y amigos, demasiados para nombrar. Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres Jacinto y Enriqueta, y sus hermanos, Héctor, Gilberto, Dalinda, Esperanza, Lola y Carlos.

Una Celebración de Vida se llevará a cabo el domingo 8 de octubre de 4:00 PM a 8:00 PM en Montclair-Lucania Funeral Home, ubicada en 6901 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago, IL. La visita final se llevará a cabo el lunes 9 de octubre a las 9:00 AM, seguida de una misa de entierro cristiano a las 10:00 AM en la Iglesia St. Giles, ubicada 1045 Columbian Ave., Oak Park, IL.
