February 16, 1952 – April 25, 2025
Peter Jerold Eckman, 73, passed away on April 25, 2025. Known for his easygoing spirit, Peter faced life with a “glass half full” attitude. He will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, and generous heart.
Born and raised in Evanston, Illinois, Peter spent nearly five decades there before later calling Palatine and Hometown home. The youngest of four children, he came of age in the 1960s and ’70s, a time that influenced his love of music, pop culture, storytelling, and the occasional rebellious toke. He had a gift for remembering the details—neighborhood haunts, friends, bands and venues long since faded—that became cherished stories told.
Peter worked for many years as a security system installer, a role that suited his curiosity and knack for solving problems. He cared for both of his parents in their later years with deep devotion. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures: cooking, fixing things, striking up conversations, and keeping in touch with those he loved.
Later in life, Peter found companionship with Carol Decker, with whom he shared many happy years. Through Carol, he became a devoted cat lover, adding yet another dimension to his gentle, compassionate nature. Their relationship was marked by mutual respect and care, lasting until Carol’s passing in 2024.
Despite enduring significant challenges—including a serious motorcycle accident in his twenties, a work-related injury, and declining health in later years—Peter remained resilient, thoughtful, and full of good humor.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Eckman and Beulah C. (Bissen) Eckman; his sister, Susan C. Eckman; his brother, John Thomas “Tommy” Eckman; and his brother-in-law, Frank D. Miller. He is survived by his sister, Alyce A. (Eckman) Miller; his nephew, Frank D. Miller; his niece, Elizabeth Miller-Tyson (Michael Tyson); his grandnephew, Vaughn F. Miller; and many extended family members and friends.
A private service and burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois, where he will be laid to rest beside his parents and siblings.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter’s memory may be made to the Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.org/give).
