She was born on a sunny morning on the 12th of July 1953 in Chicago to her loving parents Harry and Lenore Effinger. Together the Effingers had three children: Rebecca, Robin, and Richie. Robin was a burst of joy and a curious child by nature. She was blessed with talents in dance, art, décor, horticulture, cosmetology, and a voice to sing that could only be given by God.
She excelled in all that she pursued, she was a star. She captivated hearts, souls, and minds. She left her mark on everyone she met.
Raised in the Catholic faith, her studies took her from Catholic school to becoming one in a few black women in her day to be offered a full ride to The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
Life here on Earth was wonderful for Robin. Her life drove her to love, and then to meet the three loves of her life, her children: Asia, Aviance, and Giani. Her love for her children gave her the ability to want more, dream more, pray more. Through those prayers came her three grandchildren: Skylar, Robin, and Noah.
Robin was a miracle of life. From a very young age she fought all the medical obstacles and pain every day to feel the warm sun and smell the evening air. No one from the outside looking in could have imagined her health cards were stacked against her from a young age. Everyday she fought to be here to guide her children and grandchildren in compassion, love, kindness, strength, and absolute astonishing grace.
Robin was fragile in health but strong in her beliefs in God and his power. Robin made sure everyone knew her love was pure no matter who, what, or why.
She was a governess, one who governed with whit and charm. With her striking beauty, exquisite and poised, she stayed controlled while interesting, knowledgeable and kind. Robin kept everyone together. Her hugs pulled you close as she would whisper that she loved you, or “you got this” and “stay close.” There were never any losses in her book, only a chance to learn and take a different path.
A mythical, angelic human being soars above a host of family and friends, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, all of whom she’d give her heart to. She loved with everything.
The family asks in Robin’s honor, please take care of life, prior, during, and afterwards, by making donations to St. Jude’s, Northwestern Vascular and Cardiac Research, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital, and the Lupus Research Foundation.
A Celebration of Life in honor of Robin will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, from 10 AM – 1PM at Drake and Son Funeral Home, 5303 N Western Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625.
