Art was a prairie boy whose life spanned a fascinating century. He experienced life in the family’s log house, leaving home and boarding out to attend Vegreville high school where he also acted as the janitor. Travelling on horseback, he would arrive early enough to start the fire for warmth before the school day began. Lucky for him Reta Belle came to his attention at that time. Art joined the RCAF in 1940, flying Liberators in the North Atlantic, protecting the Allies’ merchant marine vessels. In 1943 he and Reta Payne were married. At the end of WW2 Art joined Trans Canada Airlines and subsequently Air Canada as a successful commercial pilot, retiring in 1981. He was subsequently involved in the development of a wholesale nursery operation with son Dave. A lover of travel, he continued to benefit from his airline connections! He had a long and fruitful life with a peaceful death in the presence of family.
There will be a private family memorial and graveside service. May he rest in peace.
