Barry was born on May 25, 1947 in Winnipeg, Manitoba and passed away on January 23, 2023 at Cascade Hospice.
As a child Barry’s family moved to the Vancouver area of British Columbia then Prince George where Barry finished high school with honours. He worked for a time in his father’s insurance agency, spent a year in England, came back and married his first wife. They moved to Victoria and Barry attended the University of Victoria earning a Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Geography. Upon graduation, Barry moved to Vancouver and worked as an insurance underwriter for Traveller’s Insurance Company (now Zurich). Barry and Lisbeth were married in 1980 and resided in the West End of Vancouver. Barry subsequently went into partnership with one of his agents who owned Harris Insurance Services Ltd. in Richmond. A second office was opened at City Square in Vancouver a number of years later. In 1993 a life change was made and a forever home was purchased in Chilliwack close to Lisbeth’s parents. The agency was subsequently sold and after looking at various employment options, Barry decided to retire.
Barry loved reading, driving his Miata, music, movies, Canadian football, cooking, baking bread from scratch, building things, visiting with friends. In the early days, he also enjoyed hiking, trips to Hawaii and travelling around the province. He was smart, organized, kind, sensitive, funny, at times goofy, loving, understanding, and his smile could make you smile. He was a wonderful husband and is sorely missed.
He is survived by his best friend and sole mate of 46 years (42 years married), Lisbeth (nee Knudsen), his brother Wayne (Debbie), nephew Jarrod, niece Jodi and their families, and good friends in Kelowna, Ontario and Chilliwack.
Barry bravely endured 12 years with Parkinson’s and almost two years with cancer. Many thanks to all the wonderful nurses, doctors, staff and volunteers at the BC Cancer Centre in Abbotsford, the Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack, Fraser Health Home Care and Chilliwack General Hospital. Many thanks also to our own family doctors, Dr. Smith and Dr. Beaumont, neurologist Dr. Tanha, and oncologist Dr. Keith.
The music lives on.
