Fred was born in Gadsby Alberta, son of Arthur and Ethel Northgraves. At a young age he moved with his family to Chilliwack where he was raised on a dairy farm on Gillanders Road. Fred married his wife Jean in September of 1954. Together they worked their dairy farm on McLeod Road, and raised 4 children. Fred was involved with the Rosedale United Church where he was a steward and served as treasurer for 15 years. He was also a life-tme member of the Camp River Hall Board, where he held the position of treasurer, helped organize monthly family dances, and carried out maintenance projects amongst other things. He also played weekly badminton for many years at the Hall. After retiring from farm dutes, Fred and Jean enjoyed traveling both domestically and abroad. Fred took pleasure in fishing and spending time in his woodwork shop, meticulously crafting furniture for their home, knickknack shelves, baking boards and pictures frames among other things. Fred also enjoyed doing puzzles in his later years, a pastime that various family members enjoyed doing with him. A quiet, unassuming man, Fred was a wealth of information and knew how to fix just about anything.
Fred is survived by his wife, Jean (70 years), brother Don (Margaret), and sisters Jeanne Bacigalupo and Norma Beer, his 4 children, Cathy Oss (Lorne), Maureen Strahl (Mats), Doug Northgraves (Cathy), and Lorill Britz (Keith), as well as 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
Our family would like to thank the doctors, Home Health nurses and OT’s, and our special care aides who have assisted in Fred’s care over the last several months. Their support through this difficult time has been greatly appreciated.
A celebration of Fred’s life will be held April 9, at 11 a.m. at Henderson’s Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, if friends and family so wish, donations to the Cancer Research Society would be greatly appreciated. htps://www.societederecherchesurlecancer.ca/en/take-acton/give
