Born on October 12, 1935, on a farm near Owen Sound, Ontario, Howard grew up in Markdale and Chesley, the beloved son of Henry and Emma Henkel. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers Paul, Henry, Walter, and Everett.
In 1956, Howard made the journey west to Vancouver, BC, where he built a life defined by hard work, respect, devotion to family, and deep involvement in sport. There he met the love of his life, Winta. Together they shared 66 years of marriage, settling in Surrey and creating a home filled with laughter, steady support, and pride in their three sons.
Family and hockey were at the heart of Howard’s life. A passionate and dedicated coach, he was honoured as BC Amateur Coach of the Year and spent countless hours at the rink — driving to early morning practices, tying skates, offering encouragement, and cheering from behind the bench. His commitment extended beyond his own boys; as the owner of a Junior B team, he invested in young athletes and the strength of the community. When baseball season came, he coached there too, always making time after work to head outside for road hockey or a game of catch. Those simple, everyday moments became lasting memories for his family.
Howard was also a devoted sports fan who rarely missed cheering on the Vancouver Canucks or the BC Lions. Beyond the arena, he was a gifted wood carver and skilled craftsman who enjoyed rebuilding and building cars, including dune buggies. One of his proudest accomplishments was building a family home in Madeira Park, Pender Harbour, alongside his sons — a testament to his patience, work ethic, and love of creating something meaningful together. Howard and Winta later moved to Sardis.
He will be remembered for his rich storytelling, quick wit, and warm sense of humour. Howard had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued. His Christian faith was central to his life, providing him strength and guidance. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose steady presence and generosity shaped the lives of those around him.
Howard will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Winta; his sons Terry (Susan), Cole (Jo-Anne), and Jay (Sheila); his grandchildren Taylor (Riley) and Dara; his sister Janet (Gord); and many extended family members and dear friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack for their care and kindness.
A memorial service will be held for Howard on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 1:00 pm at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 8871 School Street, Chilliwack, BC, V2P 4L5
