

John was one of twelve siblings. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Vera, with whom he shared 25 years of marriage. He is survived by his two stepdaughters, their children and grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
John proudly served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1959 to 1986, completing 27 years of dedicated service. He was a field engineer and heavy equipment operator, with postings that included service with 4 Field Squadron in Germany from 1962 to 1964. He later served with 3 Field Squadron and was a member of the National Canadian Armed Forces Hockey Championship team in 1968. From 1968 to 1970, he served with 5 Field Squadron, and from 1982 to 1986, he worked as a heavy equipment instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering. John’s military career reflected his strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to those he served alongside.
Following his retirement from the military, John worked for the Bank of Montreal, continuing his long-standing dedication and reliability in civilian life.
John was deeply committed to giving back to his community. He volunteered as a driver transporting patients to cancer clinics in Vancouver and was actively involved with the Royal Canadian Legion for over 30 years. A retired sapper, John served his Legion branch in many roles, including leading the Colour Party, participating in ceremonial services, and assisting as a maintenance volunteer. He was well regarded for his dedication and enthusiasm. In addition to these roles, John was involved in many other volunteer efforts and organizations throughout his life, always giving his time generously to help others. In recognition of his exceptional volunteer service, John was awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers in 2017.
John loved playing golf and was a talented hockey player, proudly playing with the Chilliwack Oldtimers. He had many friends from different walks of life and greatly enjoyed meeting them regularly at local pubs. John would do anything for anyone. He was a true gentleman, deeply loved and respected by all who knew him.
Poppy Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 7, at 1:00 p.m. at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 295.
