Mae was one of my special sister-in-laws. She always had a smile and a quick wit about her. "Sharp as a tack" as the saying goes. She was gracious funny, honest and elegant.
 I remember she collected thimbles and I would pick up some for her on my trips. 
Mae and I  had a special relationship, within the Krogsgaard clan. Her Dad was from Scotland and mine was from Ireland.
She "protected" me from all the Danes about. She was such a joy to be around. Miss her a lot.
Daily I look at the picture of "beautiful" Mae in a violet dress.  I believe it was taken at one of her granddaughter's weddings, and the glorious smile is a reminder of so many shared laughs and mischief.   She was a tease, and could really get me going as a young girl.  Such fond memories.  She was my sister, and I wanted to emulate her sense of style.  I remember well her ability to coordinate everything - shoes, purse and gloves with her clothes.  Never had I seen such tiny, pretty shoes, and at 12 I couldn't put them on.  Everything Mae did, was done with grace.  An elegant lady in every sense of the word. She lived her life for the Lord first - a great heritage to pass on to her family.  Loved you dearly Mae, and as I sit here typing I can hear you telling me about many of the "pretties" in the china cabinet, and recall our discussion about how to expand the kitchen and put up plate rails.  Plans, plans!   Also I think of the day you had your ears pierced.  We told you, "Oh  no it didn't hurt".  When you came out the first thing you did was give me a swat, and say, "It did so hurt", then we all had a great laugh.   Sweet, special times - you always called Rob and I your kids - and I will hold that in my heart forever.  Yes you did protect Rob - even aided him in stealing my butter tart.  You two (Rob & Mae) enjoyed life at Bordy's and my expense.  Always remembered, loved and missed.

The "Mothers Day Poem" was from Trina Beecroft (granddaughter). The Author is unknown. I heard it at church on Mother's Day and thought it was perfect for Grandma so I needed to share it. :)

Mother's Day poem just for you Grandma.
 
My mother kept a garden, a garden of the heart, She planted all the good things that gave my life its start 
she turned me to the sunshine and encouraged me to dream 
Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem and when the winds and rain came, she protected me enough, but not too much because she knew I'd need to stand up strong and tough. Her contstant good example always taught me right from wrong markers for my pathway that will last a lifetime long. I am my mothers garden I am her legacy and I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me.

I love you so much Grandma and I think of you so often. I miss you tremendously.

I will remember Auntie Mae for the twinkle in her eye and her wonderful sense of humour.  Auntie Mae made me feel loved and special, and that is the greatest gift one person can give to another.  She leaves an outstanding Christian legacy of people she loved and served. ~ Marti Elford

I am grateful for memories, the repository of all of life's beautiful experiences. As unanticipated events come to pass, bitter-sweet memories flood our hearts. Such is the reality that 'sister' Mae's passing evokes. Many, I recall, are the shared, happy family-times, on the prairies and at the coast. Later, after Eve's passing, I found quiet peace in the home of Bordy and Mae. There, we visited and reminisced, and enjoyed daily afternoon hospitality,  coffee and cookies, while waiting for Bordy's return from work. Yes, Mae just naturally, made everyone feel welcome, feel at home. Her memory continues to bless all who knew and loved her.

Time slips away but the precious  memories of Aunty Mae are only dearer.

Three days ago, while in Nanaimo the sweet memories of a holiday spent at 1110 Strathmore lured me to drive by and take a photo. It was the Christmas break of 1960 when Gramma K and I came by train to Vancouver and crossed on the Black Ball Ferry to visit. That holiday was surreal, I know Aunty Mae helped to made it special. There was always lovely meals and tasty things to eat with our China cups of tea, games to play, fun stuff to do and get into and chores, but even they weren't chores when Aunty was in charge! For some reason, though, I pictured Aunty Mae as being kind of a stinker! Now I am not sure if it may have been something she said like, 'What have you stinkers been up to?' or if that was the word that described Aunty Mae's witty character and smile! She was the life of 1110 and before heading home that holiday, the perfect thank you gift was purchased for Aunty Mae, a skunk teapot! It is funny what one remembers!

There has been many visits and fond memories over the years. Besides Aunty's keen sense of humour, she is remembered for the sweet, gracious lady she was. Always prim and proper, always smartly dressed, a lovely hostess, and a wonderful home keeper. She was attentive to details and everything had its place. Aunty walked the higher road in everything she did and the Lord was her Lord. 

Thank you Aunty for the example you lived and for the legacy you left. I have, we have been richly blessed to have been a part of your precious life.

Nearly a year has come and gone
Though I don't know how
And I don't know when....
So grateful you found peace and rest, 
For you were truly the very best!

It's been way too long since I've been to the farm, and when I got the news of Grandma's passing it hit me hard. However, it also brought so many good times back into my head it felt like it was only yesterday! It seems the best times in life are the ones that stick and one of those pictures forever in my mind and heart is the many times all those years ago that Trina and I, or sometimes Chance and I, would walk over to the house for a visit. Sometimes she was warned beforehand, other times we dared to surprise her, but just like she was my own Grandma she would instantly bring us in for a pot of tea, break out some home-made sweets, and we'd sit there and talk for hours. What a beautiful person and example she was for us. It brought tears to my eyes when I heard the news, and I'm shedding them again as I write this. I love you all very dearly and my heart is with you as you find peace while remembering her wonderful life.

Although I didn't know her well, I know her legacy, her beautiful family and I just want to say to all of you how much I love you and wish I could have been there will you to hug all of you. I know you'll miss your sweet Grandma, Mom and Wife. But the best gift she ever gave to any of you is a life of faith that can comfort an assure you all that she is now wonderfully happy and you can see her again one day. What a gift.

We cried that morning as Norm left to do the funeral service for Mae. It is so hard to say good-bye and to pay our last respects to a lady that we have known, admired and loved for a good many years now. Had we met sooner while I was still young and stiving to forge my Christian life, Mae would have been my mentor.  In a way, she still was. Her gentleness, her love for her family and her Lord, her quiet spirit and yes, her great sense of humor!  All of these attributes that anyone would be proud to emulate. 
It occured to me however, that we are not paying  our 'last respects' to her. Our respect for her will never end for it is an eternal quality that will last for as long as she is in our memory. 
It is also not really a 'last good-bye',  Mae has gone from life into LIFE. This earthly good-bye is simply the prelude to the 'first hello' that we will greet each other with in that great by and by. 
With alll my heart, I desired to be at the service, but illness prevented that. However, please know that my thoughts and prayers were with you all that day. Both Norm and I pray that you all will feel our Lords strength and comfort as you readjust to another 'normal', but never forgetting that she left you the greatest legacy ~one that is worth far above rubies!

After reading all these testimonies about her family who knew her best, I can't help but notice how many qualities were repeated by everyone.  Charm, grace, kindness, loving, encouraging, funny, and "never said anything bad about anyone" Wow, what a legacy she had to pass on.  I will miss you Auntie Mae.

Where do you start? What do you write?
Grandma was one of the most special people I have ever been honored to know. 
From sneaky snakes to apple pies.
Grandma was always true as an arrow. Firm when required soft as you could imagine the rest of the time.
So many very fond memories of growing up with Grandma across the yard; Hardy Boys, short bread cookies, tea. Grandma had the perfect fingernails for scratching that itch on your back that no one else could get.
With a sparkle in her eye she let a 4 year old run with my story of the sneaky snakes peeing on the outside wall of the house.
Grandma cleaning up on the Mayday baking contest year after year until they stopped. She still holds the belt.
I remember many Sunday afternoons watching stampede wrestling with Grandma and she would have to check on something in the kitchen, I knew it was because she was getting too excited about the wrestling.
She was very good a checkers ;) 
She had your back no matter what. I remember a day when I came home with a friend of mine and we were just getting out of his car when a pick-up come flying down the driveway. The passenger got out and started loudly explaining how he didn't like how we didn't let him take his ½ of the road right out of the middle. I was trying to calmly explain to him it was best that he got back in his truck and carry on with his day when out of the corner of my eye I see Grandma on her deck. I can't recall if she had a slipper in hand raised above her head but it was that kind of scene. Probably out of pure respect for Grandma more than anything else the guy got back in his truck and carried on with his day. No matter what she had your back.
As mentioned already by Juliana Grandma was a princess that made her castle a small farm in the mountains. 
We will always love you Grandma and strive to reach the bar you have set for us.

Grandma Mae,

always had a gift for words. I don't feel there are enough words to honor her.

To me she embodied grace and charm. Grandma shared her knowledge and wisdom of the world and was a mentor to me. As well I was inspired by her endless kindness compassion and sense of humor. 

Some of my fondest memories included, visiting with her as she tended to her flowers in the garden. As well she would tell me stories as we polished her shinnies. 

Having been blessed to have her live across the yard was a great comfort. Knowing that she was always there watching over us growing up. 

I will carry all that she instilled upon me in my heart.

‘MOM' is a simple word, but there was no one more beautiful or special than my ‘MOM'!  Mom was humble; hospitable and serving; sweet; kind; artistic; generous and selfless; my best friend; playful, fun-loving and witty; loving and loved by all who knew her; honorable; truly a lady; my ‘sounding board' through life; believed the best of everyone; unmatched wisdom; a mother to all who needed her; 
lived her faith; and always found the silver lining in every cloud!  

Mom enriched my life in countless ways and her love showed me the way.  Mom gave us the greatest gift----‘LOVE'----and I will love her all of my days!

My Grandma, Mae Krogsgaard

I had a difficult time preparing something to say.  It's hard to speak of my Grandma in past tense and it was also hard to figure out where to start and where to end.  Instead I have recalled memories in a poem that is written from the point of view of a much younger grandson.  These memories are specifically mine but because all of my cousins were brought up in the same unique way it's likely they shared very similar memories.

It's late winter
This cold bitter rain has persisted for days; what to do?
I don my boots and jacket – destination: Grandma's
I approach slipping between the house and gutter spout
Savouring the brief respite from the rain
Knock, knock, knock
“Come in” she beckons, as though expecting me
“Oh, don't worry about your boots dear, bring them in”
Chatter of my cousins rolling from her living room
Seems I'm not the only one with this idea
Skillfully she conjures tea, cookies, snacks and games
Whisking away the thoughts of rainy days

It's late spring,
Outside her dining room window 
She delicately prunes and grooms her flowers
She smiles as I ride by on my bike
“They're not ripe yet”, she warns
I prepare for the sour crunch
Biting down on the still red bing cherry
“I'll check again tomorrow”, I think to myself.

It's late summer,
Another scorcher afternoon
I run barefoot across the yard – destination pool
My head down, scanning each step
Diligently avoiding the bees 
Sipping nectar from the white clover
The distinctive tick,tick,tick of the sprinklers
And the rainbows settling in their mist
I glimpse up and from the shade of her deck
She's smiling, watching me
I stop, wave; she smiles and waves back

It's late fall,
I jump out of the car in my Sunday best
“Don't go far”, mom says, “Grandma's made a pot roast”
It's a full house with a place for all
Garden fresh steamed carrots and peas
Mashed potatoes and gravy
She sits, visits, ensuring all are served and satisfied
Then she gives just me 
An extra shortbread cookie

It's winter again, a year is passed
My Grandma is gone
But my thoughts of her remain
The reflection and recollection
Deepening my sadness
My only peace in knowing now her peace.
Forever loving and loved, faithful, kind, caring, gentle, graceful and beautiful.

Thank you for being here today.  This is a tough day.  I know some say that this is to  be a day of rejoicing, for Mom has gone on to be with those that God has already called home.  Scripture tells us the day of one's death is better than the day of one's birth, however, today I'm not feeling that joy.  I'm thankful God took Mom and didn't leave her to linger in her declining state, but as for joy, I'm not feeling it.  It's difficult to compress 50 plus years of memories into a few minutes of praise about Mom.  If you knew Mom, then you will have your own memories of the Christian lady she was.  You know she wasn't an empire builder, yet with her quiet, steady hand, she's built a dynasty and a legacy, that we as a family look to.  Sometimes it was what she said, and sometimes it was what she didn't say.  Sometimes it was what she did and sometimes it was what she didn't do.  In Mom's life there was a time and a place for everything ---- and she always knew the time and she always knew the place.  Mom was many things to many people, even as she was to me, Diane and Lindsay.  We were blessed with her as our Mom.  We had a Christian lady who walked among us.  When we think of Mom's life, we need to think also about Dad's life.  Mom and Dad became one.  They grew as one, they lived as one, and they loved as one.  Who Mom and Dad became, is because of God and each other.  One of the hymns we sing tells us that "Love is the golden tie that binds..." and our family is bound together by the love of our parents ---- parents to their children and children to their parents.  Again, I would like to thank you on behalf of our family for being here today, and for helping to make a tough day easier.

Where do I start?  Where do I end?

Faithful, Loving, Graceful, Generous, Gentle, Humble, Patient, Kind, an Angel.

These are just a few words to describe Gramma, but Gramma can't be confined to just these words alone.  

Gramma brought nothing but love, pride and dignity to her family.

Where do I start?  Where do I end?

My journey without you has just begun
May I regain my focus
And live life like you did, with intention and purpose

Seeking God's will in what I do
So I can one day be with you
In Heaven we will all be made new!

You have influenced so many lives I see
You have been a second mom to so many
Not just to me

I want to be like you, I really do try
By your example you have set the bar so high
I can hear you disagree
In a gentle voice so humbly

I remember you showed me how to make my first pie!
Baking, cooking, gardening and knitting were such a delight
Only with Gramma and her praise in sight

My heart breaks 
Knowing I wont see your gentle face

I know my heart will mend
Because in Heaven you are whole again!

When I was young and till your end
You held my hand
The world around became still and safe
Such a peace and comfort in our embrace
A gift only you; Gramma gave!

Gramma always had a song she would hum or sing
I will also find one to joyfully sing for she is home, in heaven!

I promised my kids a story...

Once upon a time, there lived a humble princess, who didn't get to live in her castle, but never the less, made a great kingdom all around her.  

She loved God, and God loved her, and so he blessed her.  

She worked hard to please the Lord, 
whether in her garden, or her home, 
and anyone could see she WAS truly blessed.  

But what really counts for me, is that SHE FELT truly blessed.  

One of her most recalled memories was of us grandkids, who would trail over to her house after breakfast, either to play dress up with her fancy gloves and scarves, or wooden trains in her living room. 

From a young age, I remember many occasions that I'd run over to Grama's...

She was the woman to see about milk and eggs, and often, she'd be in the middle of running a fresh batch of milk through the separater, 
ALWAYS humming her favorite hymns as she worked. 

She loved children, and her great grandchildren got to feel that love.  

My heart panged the days that came, when she would offer them a cookie, only to forget where she had put them.  
Being a loved grandchild of hers, "I" knew where they were, so I'd gently guess which cupboard to open.

Her gardens got smaller, her world got smaller, and eventually she stopped getting so frustrated "about" that.

My Grama was still there though.  Right to the end, and I got a chance to really BE with her in the last week of her life.  She was even a little bit funny.

Grampa, you were a great prince to her.  You both were a great example of a lifetime of love, with hearts that were serving.

Dad... You made your mom proud!  You made her laugh, you made her cry (tears of joy mostly).  You cheated at Chinese checkers, and I know you better now, so I believe HER story over yours.  

We will mourn the loss of this lovely princess for years to come, but I know she had a long and happy love filled life that was not at all wasted.

Well where do i start? Having been able to spend  lifetime with your Grandparents and being as close to them as if they were your second parents makes this hard to pick one or two memories to share!

Grandma was someone I looked up to, someone I stopped and listened to when she spoke. I watched her actions, such as the way she would dust her hands off after pretty much whatever she would do, kind of like saying, "there, job well done" and on to the next. I can still hear the sound of her rings hitting together.

She always had a song in her heart. No matter what she was doing, she was either humming or whistling a beautiful note. When I was younger, I use to think that even the birds would stop and take notice of Grandma whistling. I thought that's why there was so many robins out her kitchen window.

I feel like it was more than a blessing to have had grandma with us as we grew, she was also a friend and a confidante. So gentle in many ways, with her words and how she would give advice, but also with her hands.
I would pretend to sleep with my head on her lap on the way home from town with mom and grandma, just to be close to her. She would then take her soft/smooth little hand and place it over my eyes to shield them from the sun. I would then try to look through her fingers as the sun would shine through and bat my eyelashes on her palm. I'm pretty sure she knew I wasn't sleeping, but continued to hold her little hand there anyway.

Gramma, you have taught me so much, and I promise you that I will pass those lessons on to my daughter and son. I only hope to show them the kindness and love that you shown many on a daily bases!
I'll love you forever Grandma, till we meet again..........

In moments of sadness I think of you, your smile, your laugh and love for your grandchildren. The summer days outside on your deck surrounded by pansies.

In  moments of happiness I think of you, all the great visits and tea parties with real coffee :)

In moments of anger I think of you, your amazing patience and compassion for everyone.

In moments with my daughter I think of you, how much fun we had playing at your house, whether it was dress-up or trains or rocking in your rocking chair.

In my marriage I think of you, the respect and love you demonstrated that a wife should have for her husband.

In all these moments you will be remembered and cherished for always! 

I now have both my grandmas in heaven watching over me. I can only hope that I can live up to being the kind of woman they both were. Faithful and humble servents, loving and devoted wives, caring and wonderful mothers...but most of all AMAZING GRANDMOTHERS!! Miss you

My Memories of Grandma
Tea parties – sometimes with special cups that she'd take out of the kitchen china cabinet.
Making shortbread.
Sleepovers.
Playing dress up with all the fun clothes in the end bedroom closet.
Canned cherries and canned peaches for dessert – she often let us pick which one we wanted.
Doing dishes together when I could hardly reach into the sink – she'd get a stack stool and lay a towel across the sink counter edge to help keep me dry – I still do this and every time I do I think of grandma.  And she'd be humming the whole time that we stood there washing and drying the dishes.
Grandma taught me how to crochet
She helped teach me how to make and ice a cake – always a much sought after item at bake sales and auctions.
I remember putting rollers in grandma's hair and laughing our faces off while I did.
There were countless times I left school early because I was sick and I'd spend the day on grandma's couch watching daytime TV.  Sorry grandpa about all the carpets I made you clean.
Grandma hated frogs.  Actually, I think hate is a pretty mild word for how she felt about frogs.  And yet, she's got the biggest collection of them this side of the amazon thanks to her kids and grand-kids.
Grandma was always calm, compassionate, hospitable, gentle, smart – she could easily whoop your butt at scrabble – she'd always get the triple word score with a Q or and X – and you could bet that she'd win at checkers too (but I think she cheated at checkers) she claims she never did.
Grandma had a quick wit – one that sticks with me is, and I don't even remember the conversation, but the word stupid came up and she turned to me and said, “stupid, you should see so and so, they're really bent over.”  It took a few minutes.
Grandma had an easy laugh.
I never, ever heard her speak ill of anyone.
She was so incredibly patient.
I wondered often if she had eyes in the back of her head, because we didn't get away with too much.
One on one in grandma's presence I felt like I was the most special kid on the planet.
She was fiercely protective.  When Levi was in the hospital she'd try so hard to not show worry or fear when the phone would ring, but she was also very honest.  
If you played last bat with her – she always won – every time.
Grandma was always well put together, her hair, makeup, hose, heels, everything in place – unless she was in the garden.  And her garden was always something to behold.
Grandma had such strength of character.  She was tough, but not hard.  She did not have an easy life.  She lost her mom and her dad and still remained so faithful a servant.
She walked the walk – her actions spoke more than any words she ever used.  I am so grateful and blessed that God saw fit to let me have her as my grandma, a visible example of what it means to love.  Love is an action word and she demonstrated love well.

December 25 is a day that people around the world hold dear for many different reasons.  I think grandma was blessed with the ultimate gift on that day.  She got to go home.  To peace and rest and joy.  God gave us the gift of knowing that we're going to see her again someday.

Mae was my sister-in-law but when we were together she was like another sister.She was a gentle,loving lady and at the same time was lots of fun,she had such a sense of humor.The last time I visited them was a year and a half ago,and I'm so glad we made that trip.I know she is in very good place now.I love you Mae.Eloise
