It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Peter Laird Topliss, who left us peacefully on April 18, 2024, at Abbotsford Regional Hospital, with his loving wife, Frances, by his side. Peter was born on May 28, 1951, and enriched the lives of those around him with his vibrant spirit and enduring passion for life.
Growing up in West Vancouver, Peter graduated from Hillside Secondary School in 1969. He began his career as a surveyor at Matson Peck & Topliss Engineering. His journey led him to a fulfilling career in ironwork, where he became a respected member of Ironworkers Union Local 97. He worked as a Foreman on several notable projects including the construction of the SkyDome in Toronto, the reconstruction of the Lions Gate Bridge, the iconic Canada Place Sails, and the Vancouver Convention Centre. Despite a brief stint in real estate, Peter's heart remained in ironwork, where he returned until his retirement in 2013. The president of Ironworkers Local 97 remarked, “We all thought the world of Pete.”
Peter's love for the outdoors was a defining aspect of his life. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Frances Celia Topliss, his brother Michael (Audrey), and his cherished nephews, Spencer and Taylor, who will hold dear their memories of him. Peter was an avid outdoorsman, finding joy in skiing across British Columbia, camping, fishing, hunting, and enjoying water sports like canoeing and kayaking.
Peter's legacy is one of warmth, adventure, and leadership, which will be deeply felt by his wife, family, and a wide circle of friends. His life will be celebrated in a special event, the details of which will be announced later.
In memory of Peter, contributions may be made to a charity of your choice, celebrating his love for nature and the outdoors.
