Sieghard Neufeldt was born November 28, 1936 in Marienburg, West Prussia, Germany. In 1945, we fled and were reunited in Rohrbeck, Germany. When after 5 years of prison in Russia our Father was reunited with the Family. We fled again, this time from Rohrbeck East Germany to the West.
In January 1953, we arrived in St. John. Our parents courage to guide us through these times was incredible.
Sieg was baptized on May 31st, 1953 in the Greendale Mennonite Church.
June 11th, 1959 he became a Canadian Citizen. He worked in Canada Packers and other companies that took over. He took early retirement with good severance pay.
After retirement he spent many holiday trips travelling in the USA and Canada with his closest friends, Abe & Kathy Wiebe.
Sieghard lived with his parents in a house in Clearbrook. When Dad sold it, he bought two condos side by side. For the first time in Sieg’s life, he had his own place next door to Dad & Mom. He became the designated driver for their holiday trips.
He loved volunteering for the M.C.C.. He was also honoured with a certificate from the Red Cross for 50 donations of blood.
On the 12th of October 1996, he married for the first time, proudly introducing his wife Irene to all the relatives. Together they enjoyed many concerts and theatre performances. Irene, the love of his life, passed away November 19, 2000. We all missed her.
In 2001, he married Janice. A couple of years later he was admitted to Norman Manor. He enjoyed his time there and made many new friends. The Alliance Church was a big blessing for him.
Then more serious health issues brought him into the care of Eden Nursing Home. He got his last wish with the help of the incredible staff to walk a few steps one day before he passed away.
Sieghard had the privilege to travel the world: 3 trips to Germany, one to Ireland, one to Mexico, two to Hawaii, a Caribbean Cruise and more. The final trip was with Janice and her family on a 1st class Disney Cruise.
Sieghard is survived by his wife Janice (also in Eden Nursing Home); his sister and brother-in-law and their families, now counting 39 living all over Canada and the USA; many cousins in Canada and Germany.
Sieghard’s regular phone calls to cousins and friends will be missed.
A verse from our granddaughter perfectly describes Sieg’s attitude to the times:
Always remember to forget the troubles you left behind,
But,
Never forget to remember the blessings that daily arrive.
