Sophia Elisabeth Hertgers

Sophia was born in Amsterdam Holland to Cornelis and Willemina Haan (Haast) being the youngest of 5 children. Alexander the oldest stayed in Holland with his young family while Cornelis (youngest son) immigrated to Canada first followed by sister Corrie (Hans) and lastly the parents came in 1952 with Christina and Sophia to Chilliwack where they all settled. Sophia found various forms of employment from picking berries to training young hop plants and taking care of her employers young children and then in the Chilliwack General Hospital.She made profession of her faith and remained faithful to her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for her 89 years of life. She met Jacob Hertgers and they married in 1954 and rented a home for their first year together. They then purchased their first farm on Pioneer Avenue in Agassiz. Side by side they worked on the farm and Jacob also retained his job at the Agassiz Research Station for another 6 years. They raised 5 children on Pioneer Avenue and then had a chance to expand the farm and moved to Cameron Rd in Agassiz. As time went on they changed pace and moved to Castleman Rd in Chilliwack where they built a new house. Health challenges arose and cows and Quota had to go so another move to 5 acres on Reeves Rd took place. When that became too much work for them they moved to hope river Rd but Jacob needed more care so ended up in Cascade Lodge where he passed away at 87 years of age. They were married for 64 years and Mom (Sophia) remained living on Hope River Rd till it was unsafe for her to manage with health issues taking their toll. She moved to Waverly Seniors Village in 2016 where she met old friends from Agassiz as well as people she had sailed across The Atlantic with not knowing that till 2022. Mom’s love for growing house plants and sending cards with notes of encouragement to so many of us is a lasting memory.

Sophia (Mom) leaves behind her older sister Christina, son Cornelis (Geraldine) Hertgers, son Gary (Catherine) Hertgers, 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Sophia is predeceased by son Martin (1977), grandson James (1978), daughter Jenneken (Jenny 2008), grandson David (2010), husband Jacob (2014), and daughter Wilhelmina (Wilma 2022).

Thank you to the staff at Waverly Seniors Village, Chilliwack General Hospital and Trillium Bevan Village Abbotsford in their care for our Mother these last several months.

A funeral service will be held Friday January 13th 2022 at Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church with light refreshments after the service.
