

-Carmel Matthew Wellmon, 85, passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, October 2, 2011, at Johnson City Medical Center in Tenn. Born March 10, 1926 in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Wilson Pinkney and Bessie Houser Wellmon. Mr. Wellmon had honorably served his country with the US Army Air Corps, during WWII. Educated in the Belwood Public Schools, he graduated from Gardner Webb Jr. College, Wake Forest College, and received a graduate degree from Western Carolina University. Mr. Wellmon was a lifelong educator in Granville and Rowan Counties. He was a member of First Baptist Church in China Grove. He enjoyed his Christmas tree farm in Newland and traveling in his motor home. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Perry and Wilburn Wellmon.
Family members include his wife, Ruth Wortman Wellmon, his daughters, Gloria Thomas and husband, Steve of Conover and Betty Barnette of Newland , sisters, Margaret Jarvis of Gastonia, sister-in-law, Marie Wellmon of Belwood, granddaughter, Amanda Tart and husband, Ron of Raleigh, his great-grandson, Noah Tart, a niece and three nephews,.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10-11 AM with the funeral service at 11:00 in the chapel of Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Steve Wilson, Pastor, First Baptist Church in China Grove. Burial will follow in Norman Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Belwood, NC.
